The semi-finals

Estonia v England
The EU should impose a special Europe-wide tax on meat consumption to help save the planet

We on team proposition like the taste of meat. But we cannot deny that excessive meat consumption is a threat to the planet. In fact we are going to show that there is ample scientific evidence to support this fear. Meat production increases global warming, abuses the water supply and leads to a loss of biodiversity. To address the harms of consuming meat a tax needs to be imposed on it. Let us first outline how the EU tax on meat would work. We propose that the EU mandate a minimum tax on meat consumption and that the EU member states be responsible for enacting the tax. The tax would be an excise tax, similar to the excise taxes on alcohol and tobacco. This system would be similar to the set-up of excise taxes on gasoline, where the EU has also mandated a minimum tax for its member states. We will in our arguments explain why this kind of tax is the appropriate remedy to the issue. more...

Lithuania v South Korea
All evidence gathered by intelligence agencies should be admissible in courts of law

Intelligence agencies gather a lot of information that could be used in courts of law to fight terrorism and organized crime. Unfortunately, some of this information is inadmissible in courts. We see little reason to exclude certain kind of evidence collected by intelligence agencies from being used. In this debate we will prove why all types of evidence collected by intelligence agencies are permissible in courts of law. more...

The quarter-finals

Latvia v South Korea
Heavy drinkers should be denied liver transplants

An important problem that many coutries face is the serious shortage of liver transplants. Many people are unable to use the advances of modern medical technology because of the unavailability of livers. According to the United Network for Organ Sharing, more than 17 000 people in US are currently waiting for a liver transplant. Meanwhile, almost half of the situations where it is necessary to transplant a liver is caused by the alcoholic liver disease. This situation has raised many eyebrows and it is a wide-spread view that giving transplants to alcoholics is unfair and inefficient. This is an issue that we will try to resolve in this debate. more...

England v Venezuela
Rich countries should actively recruit medical personnel from poorer countries

Why should medical personnel be seen as any different than other professionals who are headhunted for efficiency and have the right to seek the highest wage they can? more...

South Africa v Lithuania
Interest rates on personal lending should be capped by law at 20%

Team South Africa is over the moon to be proposing this most orgasmic of debate motions ;) The context is clear: the world is barely emerging from a banking crisis that caused near-irreparable damage in countless local economies, and the international banking system more generally. The causes, and corresponding interventions, are manifold. We are not seeking to identify all the causes, let alone dealing them all a death blow. We humbly propose to make one useful contribution towards increasing the chances of avoiding similar bank crises in future... more...

The second round

Scotland v Venezuela
All forms of gambling should be banned

We in Scotland believe that there is one nation that shines out to the world as a beacon of social justice. A nation that truly understands that the people need not just a daddy state, or a mummy state, but also a nanny state. This nation, ladies and gentlemen, is of course, Russia. On July 1st, this year, Russia banned all forms of gambling, except for certain enclaves... more...

Indonesia v Mexico
Poorer countries should abandon free trade agreements

The policy of Free Trade is still in debate due to the questionable benefit for each side. This debate doesn’t try to limit the effect of free trade to developing or third world country .It will however argue that poorer countries, in comparison to their trading partners, will suffer due to the ‘unfairness’ and ‘expensive’ nature of a free trade agreements. more...

Lithuania v Canada
All taxes on inherited wealth should be abolished

The inheritance tax is a tax that has never achieved to reach one of its main goals - reduce income inequality. Its effect nowadays on budgets of countries is negligible. Instead, the tax infringes individual rights to personal property and free will. We believe that the reasons to keep the tax present are not sufficient and the tax should be unconditionally abolished. Let's make clear what we are doing here... more...

Pakistan v Estonia
Leaders of countries that use extra-territorial rendition should be tried for war crimes

We the proposition define the motion(LEADERS OF COUNTRIES THAT USE EXTRA-TERRITORIAL RENDITION SHOULD BE TRIED FOR WAR CRIMES) as:'Leaders are responsible for the practice, execution and admission/permission of extra-territorial detention. They are wary of the covenants that they or their predecessors have signed... more...

Bulgaria v Latvia
All drugs should be decriminalised

There are many types of drugs, which exist under the sun. Heated debates have been going on trying to find out the true answer to a major question: Does the legalization of drugs give positive or negative results? The common perception is that such substances should be banned in order to protect the society from their harmful effects. But do these issues really limit the excessive use of drugs or on the contrary, increase the interest in them? From ancient times people all over the globe have considered that the forbidden fruit tastes the sweetest. Nowadays in the countries where it is illegal to sell drugs many people are involved in organized criminal networks which lead to many problems not only in the field of drugs... more...

England v India
Western powers should leave Afghanistan

Western powers have been occupying Afghanistan since the invasion in 2001 and the escalating human, financial and political costs of the continued occupation far exceed any benefits, either to the West or to the Afghan people themselves. The time has come for the West to admit they cannot continue, as opposed to compounding the situation by committing more resources to a lost cause. Withdrawal would amount to a better outcome than the inevitable failure of persistence. We are in a hole and it is time to stop digging. more...

USA v South Africa
Same-sex marriage should be legal

In light of the recent victories of the LGBT rights movement in the U.N. Petition supported by almost 70 countries, including the entire E.U. and the United States, and the decriminalization of homosexuality in India, it is time now to examine the next step towards granting this minority equal rights. With only 7 countries and 6 states from the U.S. permitting same-sex marriage and another 20 or so permitting civil unions, this issue is far from resolved... more...

Lithuania V Latvia
Democracies should ban the display of communist and Nazi symbols

In the recent years we have seen a dramatic increase in the popularity of some extreme political views that are unacceptable in democratic society. This problem harms all democracies, but especially it is harmful for young and instable democratic states. The Baltic states have entered the route of developing democratic states after the collapse of the Soviet Union, but this route is long and it takes a lot of time before a country could call itself a stable democracy... more...

Prisoners should be used for medical experiments without consent
