Italy has the renaissance, good food, higher mountains, more sun...the list goes on. Il Giornale claims that they beat us at everything, that can’t be true, can it?

Italy’s cultural history is more rich and clearly defined

Nowhere in England is comparable to the ancient history to Rome, Venice and Tuscany. The contribution of the Roman history and these cultures in reality is fundamentally important to the development of society in Britain. There is an ‘Italian culture’ with notable (positive) labels and stereotypes – you can define an Italian identity.
The British identity is much less clear and although its celebration of multiculturalism and diversity is incredible, there is not a strong sense of (positive) national identity. I emphasise ‘positive’ because Britons are usally labelled with negative stereotypes more than cultural quirks. The hand-over ceremony for London 2012 in Beijing was an uncomfortable example of this – Britain did not have a clear sense of identity or history to celebrate. This is not necessarily a bad thing but it means Britons are more divided and less patriotic in the right ways to celebrate diversity.

The hand over ceremony highlights a lack of clear identity for London not for Britain. What realisticly could we advertise about london, banks? Tower Bridge and the Houses of Parliament are most recognisable but difficult to transport. On the other hand Scottish (admittedly faux) culture is recognised throughout the world, kilts, highlanders, castles. Similarly an 'English' culture of the home counties is widely known; cricket, quaint villages, beer, tea, good manners (becoming less the case unfortunatly). Is it bad that we have multiple cultural traditions running together? we have four nations afterall within Britain (Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and England) and numerous imigrant communities. Italy also has differing regional cultures, with a stark difference between North and South.

Venice is arguably one of the most beautiful places on Earth

Nothing more needs to be said. 16 million visitors come to Venice each year whereas 15 million come to Britain [[http://www.guardian.co.uk/travel/2007/apr/23/travelnews]] of which many are likely to be businesspeople.

comparing visitor numbers is a very strange way of rating a country. However im not sure where you got the 15million visiting britain from (from the link U gave it sounds like you are mistaking Britain and London!) According to the World Tourism Organisation Britain at 30 million tourist arrivals to Italy's 36 million, hardly a massive difference.[[http://unwto.org/facts/eng/pdf/indicators/ITA_europe.pdf]]

Italian delicacies are more widely eaten and practical than British dishes

Pasta and pizza have to be eaten more widely than fish n’ chips or a roast dinner, in Britain and across the world. Italian food is definitely more healthy and in fact we don’t really eat much true British food.
If you are a student, it is safe to say that pizza or pasta is a lot easier than doing a full roast!

The Sunday roast represents a culture and a history that many Italian dishes cannot. The Sunday roast and Christmas dinner are iconic as well as epic. The culture that goes with the roast dinner breaks all boundaries of class in Britain, it can be enjoyed by everyone and can be cooked from scratch (I don’t know many people who make the actual pasta for example).

Michelangelo and da Vinci are more awe-inspiring than any British artists

The works of these greats have more renown than any other classical artists in the world, let alone just British artists. From St Peter’s Basilica and ‘David’ to ‘The Last Supper’ and the ‘Mona Lisa’, these two artists have contributed some of the greatest icons in the history of art.

Shakespeare is one of the greatest literary artist ever to live!
The fact that his works and plots endure until today is a testament to his greatness. His poetry (in verse drama and on its own) is incomparable to any Italian literary artist. Dante’s Divine Comedy is definitely noteworthy but against Shakespeare (and other British poetic epics – Chaucer, Wordsworth, Keates, Byron, Donne, Milton, Tennyson) the Italian cannon is incomparable.

The variety of the Italian landscape is superior to anything in Britain.

Although the British landscape had an endearing beauty, the variety of landscapes, seascapes and valleys of Italy give more diversity and beauty than Britain. Tuscan beauty is incomparable to anything in Britain - the same can be said of the sight of the enchanting Adriatic from Venice.

The British landscapes are simply different. They may both have mountains and lakes but can you compare the lake district to the alps? Not really, they are different. The Adriatic may be beautiful but it does not have the raw powerful splendor of the Atlantic. Similarly can you compare the Thames Valley to the Po Valley, no. Britain and Italy being in different geographical positions means that they are bound to be different. Italy has a mediterranean climate while Britain has an atlantic north European climate.

Italian weather is better than Britain

Not even the greatest British patriot could deny this fact. More reliable seasons and a good (maybe too hot) summer in Italy is incredible.

Not everyone likes sun. Anyone who prefers fog, rain, hail, wind etc or simply enjoys never knowing what the next day will bring would have to prefer British weather!

The quality of life in Italy is better than Britain– according to the UN

According to the UN report of 2008, Italy ranked 19th the world in terms of its human development index. Britain is ranked 21st [[http://data.un.org/DocumentData.aspx?id=116]].

This is not a massive difference in a table of 179 countries. On the other hand Italy's GDP/capita (PPP) $31,000 compared to $31,400, again a small difference, why quibble over such small amounts?[[http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/4033.htm http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/3846.htm

Britain can boast a greater political history than Italy

Let’s not forget that Britain is partly made up of Roman blood.
The conquest of Britain and the bringing of infrastructure was due to this Italian/Roman history. Let us also not forget the British Empire and our current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan which, although they are not Roman conquests, are murderous.

The British Parliament is the seat of world democracy and a place of freedom. The Romans were barbarous imperialist who conquered nations and made slaves.

British legal, economic and political thinkers have influenced the shape of politics for centuries

Hobbes, Bentham, Mill, Locke, Hume, Adam Smith, Burke:
Italian thinkers do not include so many incredible names.
Machiavelli certainly deserves recognition but his contribution is not as great as these British thinkers.

British football is better (1)

Italy has won the world cup four times compared to England's once

Just look at the number of British teams in Champions League finals (and winners) in the last 11 seasons in contrast to Italian:
Finalists: England 7, Italy 4
Winners: England 3, Italy 2

The premier league is clearly the best football league in the world.
The players are the highest paid and come from around the world to play there. To say that all the best players are foreign is facetious; it still shows that the British league is better if all these amazing foreign players come to play here.

Less secessionist sentiment

You guys don't have strong groups in one region that want independence or autonomy you have a whole lot of them in major parts of the UK trying to break away. Let me see now... Plaid Cymru for Wales, the Scottish National Party for Scotland and the English Democrats, Not forgetting Mebyon Kernow the party for Cornwall . So with all due respect you guys are hardly ones to talk!

With all due respect to my Italian counterparts at least we don't have one part of the country "Padania" or a.k.a the North trying to break away from the south half the time. And by the way this is mainly for economic reasons instead of showing national solidarity with the south.

Britain's cultural history is MORE rich and clearly defined

Quite frankly, there's not much of a differance, but Italy has that sensual passion that Northern European countries don't. And their food is also excellent. And the architecture is beautiful.

(I don't endorse either choice, because, frankly with all due respect, this is juvenile; Italians and Brits admire and love each other. Both countries are beautiful.)
Britain has more a diverse history. About 65% of the world's countries have English as their official. England has a richer history. And their food is good too. I love their chips (British equivilant of the American French fries). I love their Protestant churches.
