The new Premiership season is now just over a month away. With Man Utd having lost the phenomenon that is Cristiano Ronaldo, Chelsea still relying on the aged legs that have failed them for the past three seasons, and Arsenal continuing to hope that promise leads to points, it can only mean one thing. The 19 years of hurt that has engulfed Anfield is about to come to and end, and Rafas Red Army will finally win the premiership thus regaining their rightful place at English footballs top table.

Benitez knows he has to deliver
When Rafa Benitez first arrived at Anfield in 2004, he seriously underestimated what it takes to win the Premiership. Untill last season, Rafa persisted with a bizzare rotation policy which resulted in his teams never maintaining any momentum. For example, in season 2006/2007 Liverpool started the season on fire, with new signing Fernando Torres looking like a class aquisition. However, when Liverpool played some of the smaller clubs, he decided to rest Torres aswell as other key players such as Steven Gerrard, which resulted in dissapointing 0-0 draws when surely the strongest side would have picked up the precious points. Benitez has also improved in the league season on season, and if he does so again, there can only be one outcome.
Benitez has known that the main thing the Liverpool fans have wanted since he took control at Anfield and has totally failed to deliver is the title. Apart from last season his teams have been nowhere near challenging, and if it was not for his European Cup win in Istanbul which built him massive banks of goodwill with the Anfield faithful, it is likely he would have been chased out the door by now . He has also failed to win a trophy for two seasons, and will be under real pressure to deliver something next season. Given his strange outburst against Alex Ferguson at the start of this year, it is dubious whether Benitez has the temprement to withstand the pressure of winning the title. FACT!

No more behind the scenes political battles
A large chunk of last season was taken up with political battles behind the scenes at Anfield. Benitez was locked in a battle for control of transfer budgets with the then chief executive Rick Parry. Benitez blamed Parry for being too slow to move for potential targets resulting in Rafa missing out on numerous first choices. It is also alleged that the ill fated £18m transfer of Robbie Keane from Spurs was a transfer that had been forced onto Benitez from above. With full control of his budget he should be able to purchase the targets he needs, adding to the £17m+ capture of Glenn Johnson from Portsmouth. Now he is feeling 100% secure in his own job, he will be able to focus all his attentions on winning the Premiership title for Liverpool
This is all well and good, but as stated below, Tom Hicks and George Gillett are having serious money difficulties, with Liverpool's parent company Kop Football Holdings reporting huge losses, and Gillett has had to sale his NHL franchise to help service his debt as a result of buying Liverpool. This means that Benitez will only get a fraction of the cash that will be availiable to Utd, Chelsea & City. Not to mention the crazy spending that Madrid are currently indulging themselves in.

Torres & Gerrard cant be as unlucky with injuries as last season
For long periods last season, Liverpool had to make do without one or both of their two main talents and talismen; Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres. These guys are unquestionably the two best players to currently wear a Liverpool shirt, and undoubtedly the team plays better when both of them are avaliable for selection. This is given credence via the fact that when they had both players fit and in the team, they thumped Real Madrid 4-0 at Anfield, then went to Old Trafford and totally outclassed the reigning English, European and World champions 4-1.
To win the league, you cannot rely on just two players, you need a squad with real quality in depth to win the Premiership these days. Aswell as injury, what happens if the players suffer a loss of form at some point throughout the season? Then they need other players to step up and carry the burden, and there where not enough players stepping up last season to give Koppites any confidence that it will be any different this season.

Nothing to fear from the competition
Liverpool have nothing to fear from their challengers. Manchester United have lost the best player in the world in the form of Cristiano Ronaldo. No matter how much money they get from Madrid, his goals and overall impact on the team will be incredibly hard if not impossible to replace. Chelsea have yet again changed manager, and again have gone for a man who has no experience of English football and struggles to speak the language a la Scolari. With the spectre of Gus Hiddink hanging over Stamford Bridge in a similar way to that of Jose Mourinho after his departure, Ancelotti could find time and room for mistakes very limited. Arsenal will again have to rely on their youngsters fulfilling the promise that Wenger so optimistically promises us is there. However it is hard to see them improving enough to sustain a challenge next season, and if the Gunners start the season badly, the current murmurings of discontent from a section of the Emirates support could get louder and more vociferous. Man City will obviously hope to be in the mix as a result of the vast sums of money they are spending. However they seem to be focused on buying solely attacking players at the moment, which while it will make them exciting to watch, if they don’t sort out what was an atrocious defence last season they have no hope of a title challenge.
This is assuming that the relevant teams in question do not buy anybody. United now have £80 million to play with, and given Sir Alex Fergusons proven managerial abilities, You would not bet against him buying a couple of real gems to make people totally forget about CR7. At present they are being linked with players such as Ribery of Bayern Munich and Sergio Aquero of Atletico Madrid. These players along with the proven Premiership talent of Antonio Valencia, would make Man Utd just as, if not more formidable than last year. Chelsea finished last season with a bang, and if Ancellotti can continue that form and augment the team with talents such as Pilro and Pato from Milan, then how can it be argued that Chelsea are a weaker proposition? Like Chelsea, Arsenal finished last year strongly, aided by the addition of Arshavin. Given Wengers ability to find talented players that nobody else can, it is entirely concievable that he could land the player that could solve the jig saw, propelling Arsenal back into the frame. Man City aswell as building up a vast array of quality attacking talent, have been linked with defenders of the calibre of Joleon Lescott and Kolo Toure. If they can sign these players, then they will have a solid defensive base for thier attackers to shine.

Liverpool are broke
So far this season they have been able to spend £17.5 on Glenn Johnson, so there must be money somewhere. There is also a sizeable amount of dead wood that can be shifted for a fairly large sum of money, allowing Benitez to further bolster his squad with the one or two quality pieces of the jigshaw left remaining.
Liverpool will not win the league this season, because Benitez will not be allowed enough money to sufficiently bolster his squad for the challenge. The clubs parent company Kop Football Holdings Ltd. owned by the American owners Tom Hicks & George Gillett made a loss of £42.6 million last season, and they are struggling to reservice their debt of 350m that they owe to RBS and Wachovia. Given the current financial climate it unlikely they will be extended favourable repayment periods, and the club may be faced with the prospect of havint to sell the family silver to ensure survival.

Other teams are able to outspend them
Along with the purchase of Johnson, Liverpool need to add a top quality winger and another striker to go alongside Fernando Torres. This will not come cheap however and due to their financial situation they may very well have to sell before they can buy, thus depleting an aleady thin squad. On top of this Man Utd will have the £80m from the sale of Ronaldo on top of whatever had already been put aside for Fergie. There are also the bulging pockets of Chelsea and Manchester City to compete with, and as a result, Liverpool may find themselves falling away from other teams due to a lack of resource.

They lack a strength in depth that other teams have
On the opening day of the season, the liverpool bench was eclipsed by Tottenham's who had superior quality on the bench. Apart from Benayoun they lack any strength in depth in attacking areas who can come off the bench to change a game. The likes of Gerrard and Torres might be almost to replace no matter who they would have had. But El Zar and N'gog are nowhere good enough to replace the two superstars. The lack of quality in reserve is very important as injuries take there toll on the squad cuase even in midfield they only have lucas in reserve to replace both mascherano and the unknown quantity of Aquilani in the premiership
