DEBATE: GURKHA PEOPLE OF CHT BANGLADESH

In 1871 the 2nd gurkha rifle was deployed in CHT for controling the Lusai expedition. After that the British Govt. settled some Gurkha families from Nepal to use them as buffer against the marauding Lusai. We are the next generation of that Gurkha soldiers now passing our lives very badly.Refererence of my history is "A fly on the wheel" by Capt.T.H.Lewin the then 1st Deputy Commissioner Chittagong Hill Tracts. Our forefathers also sacrificed their lives for British Govt. so we request to the British people to consider the subject with humanization. We like to request British Govt.to look in to this. Should we claim any facilities from the British Govt.?

GURKHA PEOPLE OF CHT BANGLADESH

Britain should help all those who fought for the British Empire

These Gurkhas were part of making the British empire great. They fought for the British for very little reward while the british empire made immense profits out of the territories they helped the British steal and then rule.

GURKHA PEOPLE OF CHT BANGLADESH

British Should help those Who were their side to side

Our fore father fought for the emperor many died. The government used us a human shield. Now days we have lost all our culture, language, religion everything for obeying the queen. We said our self as descendent of the Gurkha but we lost all link to our people. In this country local ethnic community treat us as nobody and we have no right to get facility from government. We want a good solve from the British Government. Till today British government honor Gurkha solder but why they completly forget those who buffed Lusai for British.

About CHT Gurkhas

CHT gurkha people are now passing their time very badly. They have no right to represent in the local govt.ie.Regional council,Zila parishads,as other ethnic groups of CHT have.Gurkha soldiers sacrificed their lives for the British Govt. The British govt. have also feelings for the CHT gurkhas. Some body stated about land. But it is not true.Land was not a important thing for the Gurkha soldiers in that time 1871. Recently in REPORT OF THE CHITTAGONG HILL TRACTS COMMISSION’S MISSION IN BANGLADESH February 16-22, 2009, Recommendations: · Measures need to be taken to ensure that Hill District Council elections are held as soon as possible. Once the process described in the above paragraph on land (point II) has been completed, elections to the Hill District Councils should be held immediately. In the meanwhile, the representative character of the Hill District Councils could be improved by co-opting members of the smaller ethnic minorities in the area. Some steps for development of gurkhas has started. They need their fundamental rights. The British have the responsibility, they should recommend to the GOB for the betterment of the CHT Gurkhas. This is the expectation of CHT gurkhas

Land

Could u tell me about the evidence where it declared British gave free land in return of the service. Still Bangladesh did not mention Gurkhas as one of the ethnic community in the CHT along with other ethnic community in the CHT. We deprived from all side from local people, Bangladesh government and from the British government. Cpt. S. T. Luin wrote his books about Gurkha solders bravery but no return of this favor.

After the Indian Mutiny (or first war of independance) Britain took direct control over the Chittagong Hill Tracts. In order to act as a buffer for British India and to keep the local tribes under control the British brought the Gurkhas into the region and allowed them to settle in the sparcely populated hill areas. This was however voluntary with the hilly region presumably suting the gurkhas quite well. Essentially the british gave them free land to settle in return for their services in the British army.[1]

Im sure U all know where I would be going with this... I really need someone who is not rather proud of the british empire to attack it and make the case for how we (im british) pillaged the third world and owe it to those who helped us do it so long ago

try the url in the footnote, as to whether it is accurate I could not say.

would need to go to either the India office records in the British library or the National Archives to find out.
