HALF OF THE MEMBERS OF THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION SHOULD BE WOMEN.
The European Commission is the executive branch of the EU, and operates as the cabinet of the EU. Each member state appoints one commissioner, so there are 27 in total. As with many other branches of government, the commission is male dominated. Is this a problem? And is forcing gender balancing the way to deal with it?

Yes, because... Representation
It is vital that governments are representative of the people that they govern. In a society with a wide range of values, cultures and ways of thinking it is important to get all of these view points into government so that the wisdom of the whole nation can be harnessed. If a social group is massively underrepresented the government cannot hear their opinions as easily, so it becomes harder to represent them. Women as a group tend to have different views and needs to men, so getting them involved at the highest level of European politics will get these issues on the table.
1. Women in politics tend to create polices that benifit women, the smae is not broadly true of men in politics
2. Perhaps not as many women are politicaly ambitious as men, if that is true should the issue be forced?

Yes, because... Women in Politics
Across the EU, women are massively under represented. There are many competing theories as to why this is the case, but one of the most compelling is that politics has historically been so male dominated that women find it hard to get involved. This means that we need a concerted effort to reverse this trend. Placing women in high profile roles within the EU is inspirational- It shows other women that they can achieve the same. It also shows men that women can and should be trusted in high powered roles, and normalises them being there. The aim is to counter the macho culture within politics, and thee way to do this is to show that women are as capable as men.
Women are not massively under represented - in the UK women -
1. get governemnt business loans, men do not 2. get far better maternity rights than men 3. get more help at school/university than men 4. get less punishment for equivalent crimes than men do 5. get specific healthcare , ie 'well women' hospital centres 6. have a specific government minister, men do not
In addition, employer guidelines (set by government) dictate that should a man and woman of equal skill apply for the same job the woman should take priority.
Furthermore, it is "ok" for a woman to pretty much say anything about a man whether it be sexist, humiliating or insulting. If a man does the same he could lose his job or be branded sexist.
I think women do pretty well in todays society, these feminists should remember its not the 70's and equality means NO special treatment!

No, because... People are not defined by gender
It is patronising to suggest that someone’s politics are necessarily shaped by their gender, and that women can only be represented by other women. This relegates how they stand on issues to a secondary matter, behind an accident of birth. This policy would send the message that gender is the most important part of someone’s political ideology, which is not only false it is harmful. It suggests that you can only be represented by someone who shares characteristics with you, when the most important Part of government is voting for someone with the same views.

No, because... Tokenism is bad
This is harmful to the feminist cause. It send the message that women cannot get to the top on their own merits, they have to be placed there to further the cause of liberalism. This means that female commissioners would not be taken as seriously because people would think that they did not truly deserve to be there. It would also mean that a highly qualified man may loose out on a job to someone less qualified, because a gender quota would have to be filled. This is bad for men, and for the country in general if it results in us not getting the best person for the job.

If someone is chosen solely for their sex instead of their qualifications the chances are they will be a worse leader/politician than someone who got through on merit alone. And the government is too important for intelligence and ability to be sacrificed for arbitrary factors like sex.
