Carol Ann Duffy has been named as the new British Poet Laureate. Does the position still have meaning or should it, as some have argued, be abolished?

THE POET LAUREATE IS STILL RELEVANT IN BRITAIN
The Laureate raises awareness of contemporary poetry
The debate around who would be the next Laureate demonstrates that many people already have opinions as to who the top contemporary poets are, but for those who don't know of them it provided good background information on the big names. Now she's been chosen, the Laureate has a chance to have her work seen in places that wouldn't normally showcase poetry, like newspapers, and so reach a wider audience. This is a great opportunity to show people that contemporary poetry can be interesting and relevant to modern life.

Supporting great poets helps produce great works
Tennyson's Charge of the Light Brigade is probably the most obvious example, but the Laureates have written some wonderful pieces through the centuries as part of their position. Giving them money (and port) is part of a bargain that allows them both the time to write, and a sense of obligation that they should be writing about important events. Sometimes the results have been awe-inspiring.

The Laureateship is a traditional post that people are proud of
People might not be able to name all the Laureates, but as a position that is centuries old there is a sense of pride in it. It represents both Britain's willingness to be seen to support the art of poetry and a sense of showing that we have something to be proud of.
The position has a long history and it would be a shame to end it when we still have so many poets with the ability to move and inspire us.

The position indicates official respect for poetry
In a world where the arts are often badly supported, any acknowledgement that they are worthwhile is valuable. It is not only the Laureate who benefits from this public validation of poetry. Aspiring poets are are encouraged and educators have one more argument to use when searching desperately for funding.
Poetry officially matters, and we should think carefully before giving up this status.

The Laureateship doesn't always go to the best poet
Some of our greatest poets never got the Laureateship. Either they didn't manage to outlive the previous Laureate, they were seen as being too radical or their greatness wasn't recognised in the appropriate places. Poets like Byron and Shelley managed to produce some of Britain's greatest works without any kind of official endorsement. Many of the names on the list of Laureates, meanwhile, are obscure - outside of academia, their work hasn't survived in the public consciousness. Perhaps politicians and royalty aren't the best judge of true greatness.

Become Laureate can put too much pressure on a poet to 'write to order'
Some people find writing much easier if there is actual pressure on them to write. People do things when it is compulsory that they wouldn't do with no motivation. That's why NaNoWriMo is so popular.
When you have an obligation to write, it's more difficult to get inspired. Furthermore, the Laureate is expected to write about some fairly dull or objectionable events, like the weddings of minor royals. In the circumstances its easy to see why some of them get writer's block. Andrew Motion, the last Laureate, said the position was terrible for his writing.

The position constrains poetic freedom
Can poets really write truthfully if they're being paid to write for the state? One could argue that accepting the Laureateship is an agreement to compromise one's artistic integrity. The list of previous Laureates shows a lot of 'safe' choices, and no doubt many of the obvious hell-raisers were filtered out. Still, even the most diplomatic of poets might one day be confronted with a situation s/he didn't agree with, and then what?
