Football is a cult that borders on the unhealthy & obsessive, which can lead to a deterioration and ultimately the breakdown of relationships.

FOOTBALL OR SOCCER - WHICH IS IT?
Mood swings that can vary from unpleasantness through to violence
As a keen (obsessive) Glasgow Celtic fan, my football club means a lot to me. I like to think of myself as a fairly rational individual, however at the weekend, eleven men dressed in green and white hoops have the ability to shape the tone of my entire weekend, and even the week ahead. I am not alone when saying that my team getting beat can put me in a terrible mood, sometimes to the point where trying to engage me in pleasant conversation is a pointless exercise.
However these mood swings can be much more serious, and can lead to hooliganism after games and also higher rates of domestic violence, this has been blamed for an increase in Southampton where the local football team is struggling[1] and there was also a reported 31% increase in domestic violence during England games at the 2006 world cup[2].

It is an addiction that can be very expensive
Going to see a football match is becoming increasingly expensive. For the 2009/10 season a season ticket for current Premiership league leaders Manchester United could cost up to and over £900 whereas a season ticket for Arsenal could end up costing as much as £1,825.[1] and this is just for home games. For those fans who travel to away games, tickets can cost between £30-60 for each of the 19 away games per Premiership season, which potentially leads to supporters shelling out another £1000 on top of their season tickets. Take into account teams that have long cup runs and regular trips into Europe and fans are paying a small fortune on tickets alone, not to mention travel, accommodation, replica shirts etc.

Not everybody is a club obsessive
For every supporter who is passionate & obsessive about his/her club, there is a supporter who has a love for the game itself rather than for a specific team. I personally enjoy watching Spanish football, and although there are clubs that i favour (Barcelona & Villareal) I enjoy watching it for the quality and technique of the football, and the emphasis on all out attacking play that is sometimes missing from other top leagues such as Serie A and the Premiership. Who actually wins La Liga is of no real importance to me. There are many people who have a general love of Football as an entertaining sport and do not subscribe to the tribal rivalries that engulf others, and instead have preferences for teams just like people who like tennis may have preferences for Rafa Nadal or Andy Murray etc.

Football clubs can create a focal point for a community
Football clubs have been a way for communities to forge a collective identity that may otherwise have been difficult to foster. In Scotland, Celtic & Hibernian were formed by the respective Irish Catholic immigrant communities in Glasgow & Edinburgh as a way to raise money for their communities and to create a sense of solidarity in a society where they were some felt persecuted & discriminated against.Perhaps the most famous example of this community pride in a football team is Fútbol Club Barcelona. The club is a Catalan institution with a proud motto of Més que un club (more than a club). The club came to be a striking symbol of Catalan independence during the years of Franco ruled Spain and their stadium the Camp Nou was one of the few places where the Catalan language could be spoken during this era.
