DEBATE: DID ISRAEL COMMIT WAR CRIMES IN THE RECENT GAZA CONFLICT?

Human Rights Watch have claimed that Israel have violated international law as a result of firing white phosphorus artillery shells over crowded areas of Gaza injuring scores of civllians in the process, and have asked Ban Ki-moon the UN Secretary General to investigate. Israel has defended its action by claiming that thier soilders did not intentionally target civillians.

DID ISRAEL COMMIT WAR CRIMES IN THE RECENT GAZA CONFLICT?
Israeli soilders knowingly targeted civillian buildings
On 15th January Israeli forces hit the main UN compound in Gaza with white phosphorus shells despite repeated warnings from the UN staff witin the building. Israel claims that Hamas fire was coming from the building which was housing 700 civillians. The UN has always denied this claim.
In the conflict in 2009, Israel was fighting an enemy whose strategy was to kill the enemy's civilians and to protect itself by using it's own civilians as human shields. Hamas hid their rockets and men in mosques, schools and civilian houses because it knew that its enemy had a conscience too big to kill innocents. If the Hamas chooses to hide in the UN compound and shoot rockets from there, Israel has a right to shoot that compound. What are they supposed to do? Sit peacefully while Hamas sends rockets to kill Israeli children from their mosques and from the UN compounds? If the Hamas chooses to fight the war in this way- then this is the way it must be fought! Israel did not choose to fight against civilians.

Use of Unconventional Weapons
Use of white phosphorous caused unnecessary suffering, causing agonisingly painful burns to appear on victims with little medics can do for this.
Although there is no international convention banning these weapons, they are unconventional - causing symptoms akin to those caused by chemical weapons - on which there are strong international norms and legislation (Chemical Weapons Convention) against.

The Terrorists Provoked Israel into launching an attack against them in Gaza by firing rockets first into Israel.
Israel stole 87% of land from the palestine ilegally and israel targets civillians and the hosni mubrak is getting bribed
The Terrorists Provoked Israel into launching an attack against them in Gaza by firing rockets first into Israel. The right to defend oneself militarily is an international right which Israel asserted.
The proposition does not answer this point, which must mean it agrees with the opposition.

Israel did the best it can to protect innocent lives
Israel called terrorists homes before it bombed them, to warn their family members to leave the house. Israel dropped pamphlets in places it was going to bomb to get civilians out of there. Israel warned civilians using the radio to tell them where they were going to attack, and all this to save innocent people's lives. Israel has no interest in killing people who have done no harm, all Israel wants is to protect itself from those seeking to destroy it, and to live in peace.
