Yes because... No because...

Less than inspiring performance on the pitch

Beckham played a total of 30 matches when he was in Galaxy, contributing five goals and 12 assists and the Galaxy finished 11th in 2007 and 12th in 2008 (out of 13 teams)! These are clearly not what great record for a team that spends £10m a year on David Beckham's contract.

When the regular season is 30 games long not including cup matches, his limited presence on the field was hardly sufficient enough to amount to any revolutionary changes. Especially when the team performing worse in the second year.

Despite his lack of playing time, he did inspire a new generation of football players in America. The phrase Soccer Mom became colloquial as more and more kids take up the sport. Yes because... No because...

He failed to elevate the sport

His initial goal was to improve football in general, in America but is that really possible in two year? Pele managed to inspire football in America over 3 years, but he was a hard worker. play over 100 games in three years and scoring 64 goals. If you put the stats of both men together, Beckham's reign in America seems nothing out of the ordinary. His impact certainly did not seem to improve the level of standard each game is being played. Nor did many players flock over to America to help build the league like they did with Pele.

Statistic shows that he did improve the general awareness of the sport in America. The Galaxy shirt was the most popular Adidas shirt world wide in 2007, attendance to games increased, helped the Galaxy to be the first team in American pro sport to have a shirt sponsor and brought glitz and glamour to game that needed that boost.
