DEBATE: THE CONTROVERSY SURROUNDING THE NEW EU ARTWORK IS A GOOD THING.

Czech artist David Cerny has sparked great controversy over his 'Entropa' installation, created to mark the Czech Republic's six-month presidency of the European Union. The artwork represents each member state in various unflattering ways, such as Bulgaria as a Turkish toilet, Romania as a vampire theme park, Spain as a construction site and Luxembourg as a gold nugget with a 'For Sale' sign. But is it politically important or just a dig at the EU?

All the Yes points
THE CONTROVERSY SURROUNDING THE NEW EU ARTWORK IS A GOOD THING.
The art has an important message
Cerny meant the art to represent stereotypes of the European nations in modern thought. The piece is not a literal description of the countries - stereotypes aren't truth, they are a mix of the attitudes of nations towards each other and some of the problems that really do need to be addressed in those nations. The EU isn't perfect and portraying it only in a positive light in artwork would be of no use. Someone needs to bring the problems out into the open or they won't be fixed!
THE CONTROVERSY SURROUNDING THE NEW EU ARTWORK IS A GOOD THING.
No art is without controversy.
The artwork was commissioned for an EU event. Right from the start, it cannot be divorced from politics. If the artwork portrayed the European nations in a positive light, someone who didn't have a very positive view of them would start a protest! Artwork is a sign of its times and the artists are affected by the political climate around them so any artwork has at least some political connotations.
THE CONTROVERSY SURROUNDING THE NEW EU ARTWORK IS A GOOD THING.
The artwork is blatantly insulting.
Portraying a nation as a toilet, something with a 'for sale' stuck on it or something that looks a little too much like a Swastika is an insult to them. It is not a very subtle way to approach delicate issues. Whatever the excuse, the artwork is going to be taken the wrong way and Cerny must have been aware of this when he made the piece. An EU event is not a time to be stirring a hornet's nest as he could cause unnecessary political bad feeling between nations.
THE CONTROVERSY SURROUNDING THE NEW EU ARTWORK IS A GOOD THING.
The artwork is a rip-off.
Whether the work was actually a valid contribution to the intended project is questionable. Originally, the piece was believed to be a collaboration of 27 pieces of art by different artists working on their own projects. In fact, it was entirely Cerny's work. Many members of the public do not feel the work represents their opinions and are unhappy with the high cost of the installation. Cerny has promised that the money used was not taxpayer's money but it is still a large amount of money to pay for goods that don't meet their description in the middle of a recession!
