DEBATE: IS A DEADLY FLU VIRUS LIKE THE ONE ON NEW TV SERIES SURVIVORS, A REAL POSSIBILITY?

The new BBC TV series Survivors follows people who have survived a deadly flu virus and shows what the world could be like. But could this actually be a possibility for us in real life?

IS A DEADLY FLU VIRUS LIKE THE ONE ON NEW TV SERIES SURVIVORS, A REAL POSSIBILITY?

Viruses can be easily carried without detection

People can carry the virus without any symptoms so it could be spread without knowledge before anyone could stop it. This might lead to a wide spread of the virus before there would be any real diagnosis or warning.

Innoculation production is slow

Effective inoculations can take up to two years to produce and test and so emergency treatments would not be available if an unknown virus was airborne.

IS A DEADLY FLU VIRUS LIKE THE ONE ON NEW TV SERIES SURVIVORS, A REAL POSSIBILITY?

Innoculations require a new strain to emerge first

A vaccine cannot be created for a new virus until someone is diagnosed with the virus, because experts do not know what form the strain will take. Therefore this could be a flaw in the plan to contain a virus and it may take hold before an effective vaccine could be created.

Government measures maybe ineffective in a crisis situation

There is no guarantee measures set out by the Government would actually be effective when there is panic and uncertainty within the country.

IS A DEADLY FLU VIRUS LIKE THE ONE ON NEW TV SERIES SURVIVORS, A REAL POSSIBILITY?

Viruses are able to be stopped or isolated

The viruses are stopped by isolation and effective infection-control methods, therefore if these measures are put in place quickly, they can control an infection and potentially reduce its spread.

Everyone is different!

It is impossible to wipe out everyone at the same time therefore there would be warnings if there were to be a deadly virus and people could prepare for it. Everyone has a different immune system and therefore some can fight off an infection better than others, therefore not everyone would be wiped out or as badly affected.

The UK is prepared - very prepared!

The UK is one of the most prepared countries when it comes to an influenza pandemic. They have a detailed contingency plan for dealing with an outbreak when or if one occurs. These are laid out by the Department of Health http://www.dh.gov.uk/en/Publicationsandstatistics/Publications /PublicationsPolicyAndGuidance/DH_4121751

This policy includes measures to reduce the spread of an influenza pandemic through the rapid production of vaccines and stockpiling anti viral drugs.
