DEBATE: WILL BARACK OBAMA'S PRESIDENCY BE GOOD FOR THE UK?

The election of Barack Obama has been heralded as a time of change for American society and American politics. But what will be the likely impact of his presidency on the UK? Will the UK benefit from the changes he has promised?

WILL BARACK OBAMA'S PRESIDENCY BE GOOD FOR THE UK?

An end to the war in Iraq

Obama has pledged to pull American troops out of Iraq as soon as possible. This commitment will necessitate a concomitant withdrawal of British troops, as power is handed back to the Iraqis. It will also mean much reduced government spending on the war – the money saved can instead potentially go towards improving healthcare or education for British citizens.

A renewed commitment to the war in Afghanistan

Obama has pledged to contribute more American troops to the war against the Taliban in Afghanistan. This will assist British soldiers already stationed in Afghanistan. A more committed US approach to the war in Afghanistan – encouraging social and economic improvements as well as military involvement – can only benefit the British forces in the country.

Support for measures to combat climate change

Obama’s support for action to combat climate change will be beneficial not only for the UK, but for the world. He has promise to support international measures to curb carbon emissions, including participating in a system of carbon trade, which includes caps on the emissions any country can produce. The USA’s participation in the global carbon emission cap system should, in turn, prompt other countries, such as China and India, to sign up also.

Plans to reinvigorate US economy

Obama has promised to put the US economy at the centre of his policy. His plan to reinvigorate the US economy should have a knock-on effect on the British economy. If US markets regain confidence, they will influence markets worldwide.

A new approach to diplomacy

Obama has stressed on a new diplomatic approach in which America cooperates with other countries rather than attempting a unilateral response to international problems. This will allow Britain the opportunity to play a larger part on the world stage.

Adverse effect on British economy

Obama’s protectionist approach to the US economy – vowing to protect the American worker and ensuring that American companies stay in the US rather than relocating overseas – could have an adverse effect on the UK economy.

More British troops in Afghanistan

Obama’s pledge to increase the US presence in Afghanistan comes along with a report that he has already asked the UK to increase troop numbers there by as much as three thousand extra personnel. As reported in the Guardian, Foreign Secretary David Milliband has suggested that Britain would be opposed to any further troop commitments. (1) But does Britain have the political capital to refuse? Can Obama's election promises really be kept?

Obama has made many promises during his election campaign, but we do not know if he will be able to keep them. The critical state of the US economy means that his priority may well be domestic rather than foreign policy.
