DEBATE: HAS GORDON BROWN SUDDENLY BECOME ELECTABLE AGAIN?

The slump that Gordon Brown has been in throughout his reign as Prime Minister may be coming to an end if his plan to solve the financial crisis works and is adopted. Will it be enough to get people to vote for him again?

HAS GORDON BROWN SUDDENLY BECOME ELECTABLE AGAIN?

The public will praise him for saving the economy

Many people are very worried about their financial future. If the Brown-Darling plan is widely adopted and works, people will see Mr. Brown as a hero, no longer would he face resistance or reluctance to him being in power. His hero status would be elevated due to his reluctance to enter into party politics. He no longer is willing to quibble with David Cameron as he has more important matters in his stride. It elevates him above the party politics system and into a league of his own.

A more likely assumption that the public would make is that Gordon Brown is saving big banks when Labour have let major companies like Rover fall over the years.

"The idea of governments as the major shareholders in our banks is never going to be easy to sell to the public" (1). This may not be seen as a move for the government to save the economy, but an exercise to give the government more power and an investment for their own pension funds.

If adopted by other countries, he will have a lot of respect among other world leaders.

A lot of politics in our modern day and age revolves around our relationships with other world leaders. If the Brown-Darling plan works, and then is adopted by other countries, it will increase Gordon Brown’s stature on an international level. Such a stature will only make Gordon Brown more electable than any other candidate lacking such a high regard.

Other world leaders do not vote on British elections. Even if they did, a hand full of aristocrats will not sway an election in favour of one candidate. The effect would be miniscule. The international regard may not affect the ordinary British voting public. When Tony Blair was saddled near George Bush he was vilified as a lap dog of Mr. Bush’s. The same could happen to Mr. Brown. Far from heroic, he could be seen as merely bowing to other leaders’ wishes.

HAS GORDON BROWN SUDDENLY BECOME ELECTABLE AGAIN?

He is back to traditional Labour principles

This plan is what people who used to vote for Labour crave! They want to see a government stopping the excessively rich making more fortunes whilst the poor suffer harsh consequences. The Brown-Darling plan will see a curbing of excessive bank manager bonuses as government money is poured into banks to restore public confidence in them.

It is not only Labour who are canvassing the idea of big bank managers losing their bonuses. "Clegg and Cameron are out-flanking Labour in anti-bonus rhetoric" (1). So Conservatives are also supporting this idea, but they are putting it across more forcefully. This will not win Gordon Brown any votes. To the contrary, it will mean that Labour supporters will warm to the Conservatives who seemingly support the bank managers losing their bonuses more ferociously.

HAS GORDON BROWN SUDDENLY BECOME ELECTABLE AGAIN?

It is too little, too late.

Gordon Brown may have a plan, but even if it does work, why should we praise him for it. He should not be now acting as a cure; he should have foreseen this crisis and acted immediately for prevention.

Even some of the cures he is proposing is not being adopted for another six months. To help the housing market and lower the number of repossessions, Gordon Brown wishes to allow unemployed people to claim housing benefit to cover their mortgages after three months of claiming unemployment benefit, this is currently nine months. But this plan will not be implemented until April.

As we hit the hard times now, such plans need to be adopted much sooner, and people will Blame Gordon Brown for this.

HAS GORDON BROWN SUDDENLY BECOME ELECTABLE AGAIN?

Too much water under Labour’s bridge.

If the British public held grudges like this against political parties, the electorate would never vote!! The Conservative party when headed by Margaret Thatcher stole milk from school children!! But since then it has not been the case that conservatives never received a vote! People understand that needs must and sometimes leaders make the wrong decisions, but they cannot forever be condemned for it.

Despite Gordon Brown’s credentials, Labour have made too many mistakes in their eleven year reign. The Iraq war is the main one, but we have also seen poor spending in the NHS leading to the spread of the MRSA bug and still scams are coming to light from decisions made years ago. People will hold all of this in mind when deciding who to vote for in the next election.

It is time for a change of government

Regardless of any decisions Gordon Brown now makes, people feel labour has had its day and it is time for a change. People are fed up of Labour, they want something new. As the possibility of a black American President is looming, people will want to emulate that change and vote in a new government, and not necessarily the ones we would expect.

Gordon Brown will still have to sort out ravaged Britain

Gordon Brown is a man of the long term! If there is one person to foresee Britain's long term problems it is him.

Think back to the windfall tax (1), Gordon Brown wished us to invest in the future of our homes rather than giving out money to help people through this Christmas alone. He also wanted this to create more jobs in the construction industry, insulating could become big business. In a time when unemployment is rising dramatically, this can only be the best long term solution, something which other MP's were opposed to.

Once the drama of the credit crunch is over, there will be years of reparations that will need to be made. Unemployment is set to hit 2 million this Christmas and it will continue to rise for the foreseeable future as Britain tries to build itself up again. Gordon Brown may have the ideas to solve the short term problems, but it is the long term problems which will interest people when voting.

If it works, Gordon Brown will no longer be needed

It is often commented that some leaders only work in certain periods of time. It is often quoted that Winston Churchill would not have been such a great and renownded leader were it not for the war. The war brought out his greatness.

“Big-picture politicians relish crisis. Great events enthuse rather than crush them”(1). The same is being said about Gordon Brown(1). He was stumbling but now seems to be coming into his own in this modern day crisis. But when this crisis is over, we do not need someone who works well only in a crisis, we need a sustainable leader.

Gordon Brown has not proved himself under these circumstances and so the public will revert their voting elsewhere.
