DEBATE: ARE TOTTENHAM RIGHT TO THREATEN TO KEEP BERBATOV ON THE BENCH?

Dimitar Berbatov wants to move to Man Utd. Man Utd want to him buy. Problem is Tottenham don’t want to sell, or at least not too cheaply anyway. They have threatened to make him rot in the reserves. Is this spiteful and self-destructive, or a right and proper moral stand?

ARE TOTTENHAM RIGHT TO THREATEN TO KEEP BERBATOV ON THE BENCH?

They pay for Berbatov’s services and as a club they should be free to make any executive decisions they see fit.

We must not forget the fortune that footballers make. Most people would be quite happy to earn money whilst sitting in front row to football matches! The money that Dimitar Berbatov is making is not springing out of thin air; it is coming out of Tottenham’s pocket, via a contract. If the club wishes to make a profit out of the player by demanding £30 million for a sale then that is their choice. The threat to keep Berbatov on the bench is merely to show Manchester United that they are serious. Smaller clubs are constantly undercut by larger clubs; they have to make some bold statements to get the money they need to renovate their team.

- Dimitar Berbatov is not just anybody; he is an exceedingly good player at his peak! It is morally outrageous to have such a talent rotting on the bench. Tottenham is acting like a spoilt petulant child, stating, in effect, that if Manchester United does not pay over £30 million they would have no qualms about leaving Berbatov on the bench.

Tottenham bought Berbatov two years ago for the mere price of £10.9 million. Man United’s current offer of £25 million leaves Tottenham with a healthy profit and should be accepted so the player’s talent does not go to waste.

ARE TOTTENHAM RIGHT TO THREATEN TO KEEP BERBATOV ON THE BENCH?

The rotten apple affect must be avoided

Tottenham manager, Juande Ramos, expressed his view that Berbatov had a poor attitude towards Tottenham and this was not conducive to team spirit. A lowering in team morale is not good for football; it makes matches impassionate and therefore boring. If to improve the quality of the football, one player has to be put on the bench; such a course of action should be taken. Taking such action will not only increase Tottenham’s chances of winning, it will also heighten the excitement of the match for the spectators, and we should not forget that football is a form of entertainment.

If the whole team’s morale can be lowered by one individual then the problem is not the individual but the team as a whole. Therefore, merely removing Berbatov and putting him on the bench is not solving the root of the problem, merely hacking away at the leaves.

ARE TOTTENHAM RIGHT TO THREATEN TO KEEP BERBATOV ON THE BENCH?

Berbatov was declared psychologically unfit to play for Tottenham.

Behind the game of football there is a subtext. Footballers have dreams and ambitions of where they want to go and who they want to play for. If Berbatov is dreaming of playing for Manchester United, he is not playing his best for Tottenham. In fact, if Berbatov wants Tottenham to sell him to Manchester United, he could deliberately jeopardise the game to enforce the sale at Manchester United’s current offer of £25 million.

If a footballer’s heart is not with the team he will not play to the standard expected, therefore it is a team’s prerogative to place a player on the bench. If a player is not physically fit to play a match he will sit on the bench, the same is true if players are not psychologically fit to play for that given team.

The reason Berbatov was declared “psychologically unfit” is because he is desperate to play for a larger, more successful club; Manchester United. If Tottenham were more diligent and ranked higher in league tables, perhaps Berbatov would be more inclined to stay at Tottenham! In effect, therefore, Berbatov’s psychological unsoundness is the fault of Tottenham’s management and Berbatov should not be made to suffer for it.

They are demanding more than £30 million for a player they are not themselves utilising.

If Berbatov really was worth £30 million as a football player, surely Tottenham would want to have him playing for their team. By keeping Berbatov on the bench they are showing that he is not worth what they are demanding for him. By putting on such a display, Tottenham will not only turn off Manchester United but they will also tarnish Berbatov’s reputation. What club would choose to go through such pains to get Berbatov when he has not played a professional English football match for weeks or possibly months, depending on how long these threats continue and hold for? Footballers are people, and Berbatov’s career could be left in tatters if Tottenham carry on making and delivering these bench threats.

ARE TOTTENHAM RIGHT TO THREATEN TO KEEP BERBATOV ON THE BENCH?

Spurs facing three defeats in their first three games

No matter how experienced Berbatov is, if he has a bad attitude and does not want Tottenham to succeed then he will not play to the best of his ability. If he is played against Chelsea, he may not score due to the negative atmosphere. In fact, Juande Ramos thinks that Berbatov’s negative feeling will affect the team as a whole, and what experience do you have to criticise his professional opinion?

Berbatov is spurs most experienced and most prolific striker. With their next match against Chelsea, the last thing that manager Juande Ramos will want is to drop another three points (especially when the Spurs board publicly denounced former manager Martin Jol this time last year for a similar run of results). Spurs need their big players against Chelsea and that includes the prowess of Berbatov.

ARE TOTTENHAM RIGHT TO THREATEN TO KEEP BERBATOV ON THE BENCH?

Tottenham have yet to replace Berbatov, Robbie Keane and Jermaine Defoe

As yet no one has been brought in to replace Berbatov, so therefore he should be on the pitch doing what he is paid to do. A deal for Roman Pavlyuchenko is forthcoming but until that is signed then Spurs need a dominant striker after the loss of Keane to Liverpool and Defoe to Portsmouth last season. Berbatov and Keane scored 46 goals between them last season, if that is not replaced then at least one half of the partnership needs to remain in the side, even if he is unhappy, as Spurs cannot rely on the unproven Darren Bent and young Dos Santos.

ARE TOTTENHAM RIGHT TO THREATEN TO KEEP BERBATOV ON THE BENCH?

Berbatov may take legal action

If the transfer window closes without the completion of a deal for Berbatov, Spurs may decide to keep him on the bench. If they do so then Berbatov may feel that his ability to earn and ply his trade has been restricted by the club. Sponsorship deals and goal incentives would become unobtainable as he will not appear on the pitch, even though he as the ability to be doing so. Berbatov could possibly take legal action in this case as Spurs would not be playing him out of principle rather than as an assessment of his ability.
