IS ADDING NEW TOP LEVEL DOMAINS GOOD FOR THE FUTURE OF THE INTERNET?

Domain Name Choice

"It is possible to implement many new names to the Internet, paving the way for an expansion of domain name choice and opportunity" said Dr Paul Twomey, President and CEO of ICANN. http://www.icann.org/en/announcements/announcement-4-26jun08-en.htm

IS ADDING NEW TOP LEVEL DOMAINS GOOD FOR THE FUTURE OF THE INTERNET?

Greater ability to target markets and users

With names such as .travel, it will ultimately be easier to identify domain names which are relevant to you or your users.

IS ADDING NEW TOP LEVEL DOMAINS GOOD FOR THE FUTURE OF THE INTERNET?

Increased Cybersquatting

The most reported potential problem of opening up the system to many more domain names is the potential for cybersquatters to buy up the names of existing brands and then use such domain names in bad faith.

Cybersquatters may use a domain name containing a recognised trademark in a number of ways, including generating web traffic and revenues for themselves, creating malicious websites damaging a company, organisation or individual or selling the web address at an inflated price to the trademark owner.

To avoid this, companies will need to purchase the relevant names for all new top level domains, dramatically increasing the cost of internet management.
