DEBATE: 'ORGANIC' IS JUST CLEVER BRANDING. IT'S NOT HELPING ANYONE.

We've all seen the products and been exposed to the advertising. And most of us have fallen for it. We genuinely believe that by eating 'Organic' produce rather than crops that may have been exposed to chemicals or genetic modification we are doing ourselves, and the world, a favour.

'ORGANIC' IS JUST CLEVER BRANDING. IT'S NOT HELPING ANYONE.

Genetically Modified crops could help prevent world hunger.

Advances in genetic modification offer us the ability to mass produce strains of crops that are more resistant to drought and disease. Perhaps more importantly, advances in genetic modification offer us the ability to do this in a cost effective manner on a large scale.

With the ability to do this we could conceivably put an end to world hunger. No one would have to face the dire consequences of failed crops or a bad harvest.

The target market for so called organic goods is usually those with a higher than average disposable income. This simply doesn't apply to those in developing countries where the food crisis is most prevalent. Nobody is trying to sell organic produce to developing nations. It is clinically proven that Organic food is better for you, - residues of chemicals from pestisides (used on non-organic crops) can build up in the human body and cause illness/injury.

'Organic' is just subtle branding used to sell produce and increase revenue.

Have you ever been to a supermarket and noticed the differences between said supermarket’s ‘Organic’ and standard ranges? Go and have a look. I guarantee that the most noticeable differences will be in the product’s packaging and price. ‘Organic’ products are often given the luxury treatment by supermarkets. They are given prime positions on the shelves, their packaging is made to be more appealing than that of other products, and they are sold as being healthier than non-‘Organic’ products.

The difference between organic and non-organic products is not in their appealling. Well, of course, different firms try to attract consumers in different ways. BUT the main difference is inside the product, in the way it has been produced and in the results it will end in after you eat it.

It is clinically proven that an organic diet is better for you than a non-organic one. Chemicacl residues from the pesticides used on the land can be absorbed by the plants, the crop of which is then eaten. This chemical residue can then build up in the human body and cause illness and injury.
