Does British Society Hate Travellers?

"Along with Romani Gypsies, Irish Travellers remain an object of widespread prejudice in British society. What we're seeing take place at Dale Farm today is the culmination of years of intolerance. There's a lot of talk about the travellers breaking the law -- but, in reality, it's a position they've been forced into. Rather than spending millions of pounds to forcibly throw families out of their homes, we should be looking at how build a society that's far more accepting of minority groups. As things stand, riot police charging protesters has become one of the defining images of Cameron's Britain." - Owen Jones, The Telegraph.

Does British Society Hate Travellers?

Yes because... No because...

Being ripped apart by Basildon Council and the politicians in government

"The memory of Dale Farm will weigh heavily on Britain for generations - we are being dragged out of the only homes we have in this world. Our entire community is being ripped apart by Basildon Council and the politicians in government." - Kathleen McCarthy, Dale Farm resident.

The community would not have been ripped apart if it had not sited itself (or part of it) illegally.

It also seems unlikely that the action will weigh heavily on Britain, the eviction could have been much better handled and was very heavy handed by the police but other countries engage in more brutal evictions and the country is not scarred by it. Unfortunately It is likely that the whole episode will be mostly forgotten in a few weeks time.

Does British Society Hate Travellers?

Yes because... No because...

We dont hate,we wish they would contribute.

I know a lot of travellers and live close to a site and in all my years they have always been on the take. Only a very few contribute to society or the economy. Why should us tax payers support them ? it is their choice to live as they do, so should do it at their expense, nobody owes them anything.Dale Farm was handled as best the police could do,it was only as bad as the travellers wanted to make it. Having met many travellers in the midlands london and wales they make a bad name for themselves because its just take take take.
