Should obese people, in countries with a national health service, face higher taxes?

Obesity is a growing epidemic in modern Western society. It is linked to numerous health problems such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease, yet is a preventable and curable problem. Should obese people face higher taxes based on their increased likelihood of poor health? Could a tax provide an incentive for weight loss? Would a tax cause more problems than it solves?

Should obese people, in countries with a national health service, face higher taxes?
Yes because...

This would motivate people to think about their food choices

Obesity levels need to drop if a nation is to improve it's health. A tax deterrant would motivate people to make wiser food choices and not overeat. It would raise public awareness of the significance of the problem of obesity.

No because...

By this logic stupid people should be taxed for the drag they are on society. It is not the governments responsibility to monitor our food choices. These are adults we are talking about no five year olds.

Should obese people, in countries with a national health service, face higher taxes?
Yes because...

No its not wrong.

Fat people have more rights going for them, and 95% decide to be fat. Obese is a new terminology for them to hide behind. They are costing the taxpayer more than any other section of society who decide to bring it on themselves.

No because...

if your gonna pick on fat people then why not smokers and drinkers, then theres people with work related illnesses by rights they didnt have to do there jobs and could of chose another, people with std's they could have had safe sex......................................the NHS is for everyone, everyone is treated no dfferent to any other and thats the way it should remain or where do you draw the line

Should obese people, in countries with a national health service, face higher taxes?
Yes because...

Fatties cost too much.

The fat folk are having to have larger ambulances, hospital beds, morgue freezers, lifts and hoists, operations, bigger doorways etc etc all paid for by the taxpayer plus stronger nurses and carers to maul them about and subsequent bad backs in doing so which costs more sick pay and liability insurances. It is never ending the extra burden they are to the system. They are costing the system about 90% more than the smoker or drinker which is another self inflicted injury, but the smoker and drinker are paying a fantastic amount more tax than the fatties.

Obesity can be a psychological problem and should be treated as such

Many people suffering from overeating do so compulsively as a result of psychological problems. For example a depressed person might comfort eat to feel better. Why should these people be punished instead of helped?

Yes because...

It is self inflicted. I eat a lot but I work or excercise. Obesity is called a terrible desease. It is only terrible because of idilitis and the amount of money folk have to gorge themselves.Ask your parents or grandparents how many fat folk there were years ago, rare. So it is not an illness, there were more depressed folk years ago so that is no excuse. Rubbish food is no excuse,we all eat it. Smokers pay a lot of extra tax but the obese are costing the nhs(tax payer) far more with larger ambulances, inhouse lifts and stairlifts, more paramedics to lift them, hospital beds and refrigerators in the morgues. And its down to being idle and a glutton, one cannot do both. A girlfriend of mine who weighs 8 stone has to pay excess if her bags are a bit over at the airport, then a 20 st person climbs aboard at no extra charge, where is the justification in that ?. She bought her teams rugby shirt, child size. She paid the same price as the person buying an xxl, where's the justification in that ? triple the amount of cloth. Its the same in all clothes shops, its not right. If you purchase material they charge per mtr. Yes charge them more, they are not paying extra tax, it will go towards the forthcoming gastric band they may require because they have no will power. Having worked with depressed people for many years it was rarely an excuse for obesity, its a new thing because they can. If we returned to stateing they are FAT instead of obese this would help.

Should obese people, in countries with a national health service, face higher taxes?
No because...

its wrong

why do obease people get less rights than other people and it is their choice to do this and you might as well just don,t worry about it

Yes because...

Yes they should pay higher taxes, and air fares, and more for their clothes, they cost the health service(tax payer) enormous amounts on ops, bigger and stronger beds, ambulances, freezers in the morgues, more nurses to lift and move them etc etc. If my baggage is overweight I pay the excess then sit next to a lardy who is 4 times heavier than me,and paid the same flight price. I buy my wife a size 10 dress and it costs the same as lardy's size 28, where is the logic in this. I buy cloth for curtains and pay for the amount I need, they don't give me twice as much for the same price. No, the OBESE appear to have more rights than those who don't sit about gorging.

of course people who are obese should not pay higher taxes. Who do other people or the government think they are telling people what size they should be, or what they can and cannot eat. I know several people who are overweight and they eat little amounts of healthy food and do plenty of exercise. The reason they’re overweight is due to genetics and a slow metabolism, it’s nothing to do with eating fatty foods, but even though they’re overweight, they’re the healthiest people i know, and i know people who are slim but are the most unhealthy people i know, because they eat all the junk food thats on the market and do no exercise at all, they’re slim because they have fast metabolisms, so don’t gain weight , but if they had a cholestoral test done they would have the most amount of fat in their blood than someone heavier. When are the people in this society going to stop being so selfish and unkind towards others, whatever happened to love your neighbour, why do people not try to help people instead of putting them down and looking upon them as subhumans. People are made differently, not everyone is supposed to be the same weight, genetics make larger people and smaller people. Where is it going to end? are disabled people and people with learning difficulties or sick people or the old going to be targeted next, because they don’t contribute to society. Are they going to be disallowed health care because they are unable to work and made to pay higher taxes from their benefits, are they the next ones who will be seen as a burden on society? So in the future everyone will have to be perfect will they? Everyone will have to be the correct weight, the correct age and have no illnesses or disabilities and if they do they will be hated and put down and made to suffer, because they will be costing taxpayers too much money for them to exist in this world. So what will happen next, will the obese people, disabled and old people and maybe even unemployed people have their benefits stopped altogether and will they be told that they can’t be allowed to live in this “PERFECT” society anymore, so what the government will do is take them all and place them in camps away from society where they’ll be “looked after” at a minimum expense to the taxpayer, then a month later the family of the poor sod who’s been forced out of there home get a letter saying that they’re mother, father brother or sister has unfortunately died from being obese or old or from their disability, when the real reason is they’ve been terminated, murdered. Then what happens, any one who is on benefits or unemployed is not allowed to have any children, because it’s the taxpayer who will be paying for the child, and any child that is born disabled will be taken a way and terminated because they would serve no useful purpose in this perfect society, all they would do is bleed from it. You think i’m being a bit paranoid and over the top with all the things that i have said, does nazi germany not come into your thoughts, the aryian race where everyone had to be blonde haired and blue eyed and the disabled and sick where taken away and murdered, and anyone who didn’t fit the model of the perfect human being was demonised, put down, hated, and killed by the so called civilized society. Well that happened alright and it seems that this is the way this society’s attitudes is heading towards, where everyone has got to fit the perfect mould of how a human being should look and live their lives, it’s disgusting! Look at how many tv presenters you have seen over the last few years that have been on crash diets because their producers have told them that they can’t be a few pounds overweight because it presents a bad image, dozens of them, and it’s increasing everywhere. People are being told that they are unhealthy, inferior and will not be accepted into a society that is the body obsessed, where every one has to look perfect. It’s getting out of control and it has to stop. People wake up and change your attitudes , have compassion for people who are suffering in this world, and be kind to people who have less than yourselfs, stop hating people because they are different, everyone pull together and stop being so damn selfish or soon we will have officers fining us for sneezing in the fucking street because it could pass disease onto another “PERFECT” citizen in this “PERFECT” society in which we all happily live.

Obese People work harder and put more time and effort into their work. There are lots of people who eat healthy even obese people since they don’t have much time to exercise because they’re always working sometimes harder and longer hours than those who fit the normal weight and body mass index. being obese doesn’t mean it’s all fat there are those who workout who fit the obese category, and being obese doesn’t necessarily mean your unhealthy it could be a slow metabolism, a medication effect, or a psychological issue such as a compulsion like Binge eating disorder. Also most of the obese population is of poor social economic status junk food is too cheap and easy to make while our health foods like fruits and vegetables there’s very little funding going into from the government, the government puts the peoples tax dollars more towards the meat industry funding, if you eat more meat than fruits and vegetables and fiber diet your LDL cholesterol and blood pressure increases, meat contains a lot of protein but where there is protein the majority of that proteins presence is accompanied by fat and bad fat at that which can lead to obesity if your not exercising enough and eating well. The majority of junk food is cheap mainly consumed by the poor economic status people because that’s where the government dollars go, along with the dairy industry. Obese people should not be taxed rather the junk food, meat, and dairy industry when we buy them should be taxed. we need to give more of our government dollars from taxed towards the fruits and vegetable industry funding, and possibly make gym memberships free or at least cheaper, why not make gyms be open all night and day 24/7 365 days a year. We need gyms to become our new fast food industry like at the rate of McDonald’s one every 2 or 3 blocks there are exercise technologies where you use kinesio-energy to run your media like cable tv and video games we need to invest more into those types of media and more exercise home equipment that has that technology to be cheaper instead of electric and battery operated exercise equipment or media companies to add kinesio – energy as an outlet for their TVs and Computers as options we need government funding to hep media companies to invest in that type of equipment using kinesio-energy. We need healthier fast food menu places not just nutrition facts posters but fast food that can give us our health back and help us stay on our diets when we want to be on them and in a rush to go somewhere like work. Plus if we tax the obese it would go against discrimination laws just like it is against the law not to hire or fire someone due to their race/ethnicity, sex, pregnant women, disability, religious beliefs or affiliation, or body size, so why should we make the exception for body mass and weight and their body shape. only disregarding people unconnected with their community make assumptions without looking into the reasons why people are and have become the way they are. behind every picture there is a reason of a cause and effect. We need to look into the reasons why society has become obese and fix them not just tax them because we say so and we want too.
