In a college English course titled, "Recent Popular Literature", much discussion revolved around the the belief that literature and the written word is becoming a lost art. With the rapid advances in technology, there is little room left to give books, poetry, and other forms of text. Less people are reading than ever before; Is literature becoming extinct?

THE DEMISE OF THE WRITTEN WORD
Popular Literature?
Literature and poetry are less popular and appealing to youth, making them more defunct for the next generations.Modern young people are loosing interest in literature and poetry, this may cause the writen word to become increasingly inaccessible to succeeding generations. If youth are being put at risk of premature death by literature and poetry, there will be no next generations.
However I dont actually think the writer is trying to say this, I think they are merely not over fussed about grammar.
Youth are being taught more advanced works in the classroom and are developing a higher level of literary quality, so they are, in fact, interested.

Online Answers
The tangible "book" is being replaced by online text and databases, many of which are just summaries of significant works of literature.
Online text only creates more availabity for individuals who cannot always get to a book.

How about handwriting?
With most classrooms switching to computers for all textual communication and work, the idea of writing is diminished and is less of an internal, creative process.
By learning to use a computer to creatively write, youth are able to create more works quickly and easily return to them.

English literature exams can be on film!
English Literature A-levels now contain at least one option of writing about a film or television production. How, exactly is this 'literature'?
The art of screen-writing is a direct descendant of the stage, and many of the same considerations apply when evaluating it. The script itself is literature, and the play or film are interpretations of that script. When words are written to be spoken there are different considerations, such as how easily pronounced they are, how they work rhythmically and whether they have any internal patterns such as rhyme or alliteration. Studying the performance is a way of seeing how well those words work when they are being put to the use the writer intended. Hamlet is literature whether it's on stage, on screen or read directly. But each interpretation will be different and will allow the reader/viewer to experience the story in a different way.

If we let it, so don't!
Literature will only become obsolete if we let it! Try to read to children and they can't sit still, but try and animate the story in some way, they will listen. Everybody needs to read more! Start from an early age and literature will never be obsolete.

Literature is always in flux
Literature isn't a static core of classic titles, but changes with fashion just as everything else does. When the Romantics were writing, the novel was a new and disreputable form that was seen as a contributor to the degeneration of society. A couple of hundred years - and many thousand books - later, and reading classic novels is seen as a staple part of the study of literature. At the moment people might worry that much current writing is frivolous and meaningless, but in the future perhaps we'll see the value in things like blog posts and internet debates, that archive opinion and allow everyone a voice. Perhaps we'll find that the general population have become more skilled at rhetoric, or perhaps people will be interested in charting the rapid change in language as it adapts to typed communication.Even now, the most striking thing about this online writing is the sheer volume of it. People are writing, and other people are reading it. The written word isn't dying - it's thriving in a different place.

Nah we are too proud of our spellings to let written language disappear
We associate intellect and elitism with good grammar and perfect spelling. Where would we be without 'Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious'?
