Kashmiri people should be given the right of self-determination.
Kashmir has been at the heart of the dispute between Pakistan and India practically since independence from Britain. During partition the princely states were given the choice of either joining India, Pakistan or to remain independent. Almost all the states decided to join India as most were not viable as independent entities. Kashmir however has a Muslim majority so Pakistan expected the state to join it. When it appeared that the Hindu Maharaja would opt to join India Pakistani tribesmen invaded resulting in a war over the state. A UN resolution imposed a ceasefire and provided that "the final disposition of the State of Jammu and Kashmir will be made in accordance with the will of the people expressed through the democratic method of a free and impartial plebiscite conducted under the auspices of the United Nations." However as troops were not withdrawn the conditions for holding it were not met. Kashmir has since remained divided, with a third division with China added after the Chinese invasion of India in 1962. Peace talks continue to get nowhere. Regardless of the stalled peace should Kashmir be allowed to exercise its right to self determination?
Kashmiri people should be given the right of self-determination.Yes because... No because...
The Effort will never work
Kashmir will remain a state that will be under some other country's sovereignity because it is at a point where all the countries would want it. It will always be kept against it's force because the people are divided. Thus, there will be no way of telling what they really want.
