Should smoking be illegal?

Why smoke when you will slowly die? It's bad for you and it is made with 4000+ nasty chemicals which include ingredients that are also in rat poison. Shouldn't they be illegal if they kill you?

Should smoking be illegal?

Yes because... No because...

FDA Approved without being burned

In 1994, a list of 599 additives approved for use by the US Government were published by five major tobacco companies. All of these ingredidients are approved as additives for foods, but the 4000 or so compounds given off when they are burned were not.

What is dangerous and harmful about a cigarette is the smoke, not the cigarette itself. Many kinds of carcinogen, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, hydrogen cyanide and ammonia are all present in mainstream or sidestream smoke, or both.[[http://quitsmoking.about.com/cs/nicotineinhaler/a/cigingredients.htm]]

This is one of the reasons why passive smoking is still a major health risk. Just because you're not actively smoking doesn't mean you won't be affected by all these horrid compounds.

Cars hold uch more value and are far more useful than cigs...

Chemicals exist everywhere but this does not iso facto make them bad for you in the quantities in which they are present. Chocolate is toxic in large enough quantities, fruit seeds and stones contain cyanide, water can contain thousands of chemicals which in sufficient dosage would be harmful and still be entirely safe to drink (and even distilled water can be toxic in and of itself). The point is that every substance on earth has a level at which ingesting it can lead to death (known as the LD50 dosage) but equal all have a level, however small, at which consuming them has no discernable effect.

Yes cigarettes contain harmful chemicals but so do huge numbers of things people use every day, cars for example. That something is harmful doesn't mean it should be made illegal.

Should smoking be illegal?

Yes because... No because...

It is bad for you.

Smoking should be made 100% illegal. It brings many things that are harmful to you and to others. For you it will hurt your lungs and could even get cancer. Some kids each year die from second hand smoke, where they are exposed to smoke . We lose millions around the world each year from smoke I have even lost a friend a few years ago to smoke. Click for more info. http://ash.org/outdoors.pdf

Alcohol can be bad for you. However prohibition in the USA proved beyond a doubt that banning substances does not stop people from using them and can lead to more harm as illegal suppliers, obviously, have no governmental checks on the quality or contents of the product they are supplying.

No, it does not. In fact, making a common ill illicit can make it more enticing to some people; a guilty pleasure if you will.

Aside from this there is the free will element. If a person chooses to put something into their body then it is their choice it is not the job of the state to 'protect' us from ourselves.

it's a big industry that funds suspect research

"Philip Morris, one of the world's largest cigarette firms, is being accused by the anti-smoking lobby of attempting to deceive smokers into believing they can improve their chances of having children if they take vitamin supplements.

Campaigners such as the anti-smoking charity Ash say that tobacco giants have turned their attention to treatments which may boost fertility in a "cynical" attempt to change their image.

The criticism is in response to the publication of a Philip Morris-backed study this week which concludes that taking supplements of the mineral selenium, which is found in shellfish, as well as vitamin E tablets can boost fertility in men who have low-quality sperm.

However, the study, carried out by experts in Montreal in Canada, fails to make any mention of the fact that smoking drastically undermines sperm quality and that any benefits of vitamin and mineral supplements would be cancelled out by the effects of cigarettes."

Should smoking be illegal?

Yes because... No because...

It is very bad and you could get cancer

Yes, in my opinion I think that smoking should be illegal because smoking is something that is extremely bad for you and can cause many health issues. Smoking should be banned because it's harmful for your bodies, causes cancer, and pollutes our environment. Smoking is not a good thing for people to be doing, it makes your lungs bad, and aren't good for the people around you. The money people spend on making and buying cigarettes can be used for many other things such as food, and resources. All smoking does is take away from families and cause more lung diseases and deaths. Smoking can kill a lot of people. Nowadays a lot of people get cancer or other diseases from smoking. Thousands of people everyday go to the hospital to get treated mostly for cancer, but by the time you find out you've got cancer, you've already done so much damage to your body. The most common type of cancer to get from smoking is lung cancer. When you go out in public, other people can get sick from second hand smoking. So, absolutely it should be illegal.

Oh, Dear Susan.
May I call you Susan? Alright.
Your argument for making smoking illegal seems to be that it's "Bad for you"
Now, Lets look at other things that are "Bad for you"
Sitting
Eating foods high in fat
High-Fructose Corn Syrup
Taking a shower every day
Sitting down on the toilet when having a bowel Movement
Wearing Shoes

Now, You may not understand why some of these things are bad, but I assure you, they each have their downfalls
Sitting to much can cause heart conditions in itself. Just sitting. Should we outlaw that?
What about benefits? Are you aware that smoking has benefits?
Susan, I do not believe that you are.
What about automobiles? They kill tons of people to. So does alcohol.
There are many things in this world that are bad for you.
But each individual must take a look at the pros and the cons and decide for themselves if it is a risk they are willing to take.
Lets not forget
Freedom of Choice.

No, it is estimated that around 38% of all people living in the United Kingdom smoke. Whilst it is impossible to deny the sheer damage smoking can cause to ones health it is simply ridiculous to make the argument that it should be made illegal. For those of you unfamiliar with the legal system in England and Wales it is important to understand that by making something illegal you are making something prohibited by law and usually when you commit an illegal offence you leave yourself open to be punished by the judicial system of the state in which you committed the offence. If smoking was made illegal tomorrow you can guarantee that the vast majority of smokers would continue to smoke, even if that meant they had broken the law, because smoking is highly addictive and it takes more that a new law to get people off that habit. It would be impossible to penalise the entire 38% of the population if they contnued to smoke. Police time would be restricted, courts would be packed and many people could face fines, criminal records and/or jail depending on the punishment in this scenario. So in conclusion, whilst I fully support the need to make people aware of the damage smoking does it would never be possible to simply outlaw it and expect the entire population to simply stop smoking the moment it becomes illegal.

Should smoking be illegal?

Yes because... No because...

Smoking is harmful even to non-smokers

Even if you don't smoke, passive smoking affects everyone. Why risk the people that have made the right choice and not decide to smoke's lives?

Should smoking be illegal?

Yes because... No because...

Harm Principle

The human is a entirely sovereign being. John Stuart Mill said that any person may make their own choices, so long as it doesn't harm anyone else. People have the right to smoke, even if the state doesn't approve. The consequences of smoking are far outweighed by the consequences of the state taking away the rights and liberties of people because the people fully understand what they are doing. A long, hard-fought propaganda campaign against smoking has occurred, making it obvious to all of society that smoking entails very serious health risks, and when someone willingly chooses to smoke, they have the right to smoke.

Should smoking be illegal?

Yes because... No because...

Legalizing and regulating is better than leaving it to the black market

Side proposition is going to have to prove to us that the black market is substantially better than legalization and regulation, whether it be a matter of principle or pragmatism. When we leave smoking illegal, we create two fundamental issues; firstly, we cut out the addicted from cigarettes. When that happens, they will move to the black market to supply their addiction, and in doing that, we see the second huge issue; funding drug cartels, murderers and gangs rather than putting those dollars to the government. Side proposition would like you to enter this market, where they fundamentally change society, and where the addicted will have to purchase for exorbitantly high prices from these gangs who will have a monopoly, as well as having to be arrested or fined for simply supplying an addiction that the government supplied beforehand, leaving the responsibility solely in the hands of the government.

Should smoking be illegal?

Yes because... No because...

Damage to the economy through loss of revenue

Many countries generate vast amounts of capital which is injected back into society in a number of beneficial ways.

Take the UK for example, approximately 80% of the price of tobacco products is tax that all goes into the government coffers.
Consider there are millions of smokers on 20 a day, each of these is currently contributing nearly £5 every time they buy a packet of cigarettes. That is a very, very large sum of money going into the coffers every day.

The loss of such revenue would then either have a severe effect on the economy or would need to be made up in other ways, are you willing to put your money where your mouth is and pay extra taxes to offset this large financial void that would be created, or see the economy sink even lower.

Then there is also the large addition to unemployment from the tobacco industry, where would the money come from to pay all these unemployed people, especially with the lost of revenue the government would have.

So in essence you would stop people harming themselves by harming the economy on a global scale, you would increase unemployment and improve them profit potential of the criminal element of society beyond belief.
