DEBATE: WIND FARMS AS A VIABLE SOURCE FOR ALTERNATE ENERGY

According to the Green commons web-site America is facing many significant problems that may lead to an energy crisis. These problems include: • The Energy Information Administration admitting that its Annual Energy Outlook projections have overestimated energy production, and underestimated demand, since 1997. • A prediction, written in a Wall Street Journal report, that the 50-60% production increase predicted by 2025 will not be met, and high energy prices are likely to be with us for decades to come. • A prediction by The International Energy Agency that global “energy squeeze” by 2012. • The report that the world's third largest oil field – the Cantarell – is failing. • Reports from Bloomberg, Forbes, and the Financial Times that a series of armed attacks on the Mexican energy infrastructure that have the country on the brink of collapse. All of these are problems that have the potential to significantly impact the cost of energy, costs which must be paid, by us, the consumer.

WIND FARMS AS A VIABLE SOURCE FOR ALTERNATE ENERGY

What we need to learn is how to harvest these inexhaustible sources of free energy.

a. Alternative energy, such as that found in wind farms can greatly benefit people.

b. We need mass solar collectors and large-scale wind farms, to supply power to densely populated areas.

c. A good example of how to implement a wind farm system can be found by looking at the wind farms in Texas.

d. For the past two years, Texas has been the top U.S. wind producer, with over 3,953 wind-generated megawatts (MW) installed. Texas is also the first state to achieve the milestone of one gigawatt of wind installations in a single year (2007), leading the nation in new wind power capacity installed (1,618 MW).

AWEA has determined that two-thirds of the predicted growth of wind energy generation in the U.S. will continue to occur in Texas, as three of the five largest wind farms in the nation are located in Texas. Texas already holds the record for the world's largest wind farm, Horse Hollow Wind Energy Center. It also is the site for the nation's second-largest wind farm, the 504.8-megawatt Sweetwater wind project, the fourth phase of which attained commercial operation in May, 2007.(State Energy Conservation Office, 2008).

WIND FARMS AS A VIABLE SOURCE FOR ALTERNATE ENERGY

Energy costs are on the rise

According to the American Energy Independence web-site “U.S. consumers spend an extra $5 billion each year for each $1 increase in the price of crude oil. If oil stays at $100 a barrel for the next 12 months, consumers will have shelled out an extra $100 billion for oil by nest year” ( Bengston, 2008).

a. Oil is no longer viewed as just another commodity. In the minds and hearts of the American people, oil has become associated with terrorism, political corruption, corporate greed, and global warming.( American Energy Independence). What I am trying to say is that “energy is not oil. Energy can be taken from other natural resources. Oil is merely a convenient source of energy. With the help of new technology, America’s energy needs can be obtained from sources other than petroleum. (American Energy Independence)

b. With the ever increase rate of non-renewable energy sources, it is important that Kansas starts to look at and implement ways in which to better utilize renewable energy sources.

WIND FARMS AS A VIABLE SOURCE FOR ALTERNATE ENERGY

Potential Benefits

a. Much lower energy costs, wind power only costs about 3cents per kilowatt hour

b. Sustainable income for farmers and rural land owners

c. Land owners can put wind farms on their property which help cut the cost of electricity while giving them a consistent source of income

d. Dramatic savings for schools which could help to offset the budget crisis that many schools are facing

e. For example, according to the Denver Post, a school district in Colorado built a wind turbine to help cut down on overhead costs – it is estimated that over its 20-year life span, the turbine will cover the school district’s $80,000 a month power bill

WIND FARMS AS A VIABLE SOURCE FOR ALTERNATE ENERGY

Expensive

a. Wind power can be expensive The "fuel" is free, but there is still a lot of investment to be made in building wind farm capacity across the US. That makes the current price for wind a bit more expensive than continuing to burn fossil fuels in plants that were built and paid for long ago. Our investment in wind power ensures a cheap, clean, inexhaustible source of energy now and for future generations.

WIND FARMS AS A VIABLE SOURCE FOR ALTERNATE ENERGY

May be hard to see the change

Nothing changes with your local utility when you buy wind power -- you will continue to receive your electricity and a separate electricity bill from them. The added amount you pay for cleaner, better energy ensures that you are offsetting the impacts of the electricity you use from the grid by replacing it to the grid with clean, sustainable wind energy.

WIND FARMS AS A VIABLE SOURCE FOR ALTERNATE ENERGY

Substantial Costs

But according to renewable energy expert Glenn Schleede, the officials of Radnor Township have been hoodwinked. Wind energy entails significant environmental costs, with little environmental gain, and significant economic costs that hurt customers, but serve to line the pockets of wind farm owners.

Windfarms are not aesthetically pleasing and can completely destroy picturesque countryside.
