Should the World Cup be held in Russia where there is so much racism and xenophobia
Recently, a black Brazilian footballer who plays for a top team in Spain, commented that he had to live with racism every day of his career, with crowds shouting "monkey" and other racist terms at him constantly throughout games. Other black players have made similar complaints, hence the launch a few years ago of the largely useless campaign UNITED TO KICK RACISM OUT OF FOOTBALL which was launched by Rio Ferdinand and a few other black footballers. There has been a recent resurgence of neo-Nazi, racial hate crime in Russia, partly fuelled by the terrorist activity in the Chechen region of the country, but also mostly aimed at anyone of black, Romani, or Jewish descent. Many black British players have expressed their reluctance to go play in the World Cup over there, let alone bring their families along. It seems as though FIFA, which has recently been described as institutionally sexist, is also institutionally racist and that it should consider the venue of the World Cup and its level of safety for the growing numbers of black players on national teams. However, none of this seems to have crossed the minds of the officials who voted to hold the World Cup in Russia. It is time that the footballing world wake up and realise that some 30-50% of their national players are black in Europe alone. If they had more black footballing officials perhaps they would take into consideration the safety of their players rather than political and cash back-handers when deciding where to hold the World Cup.

Yes, the world cup should be held in Russia. Racism is a propaganda which is spread out through black people. They often forgett that they are also racist toward non black!
Every country desrevers an opportunity to host a world cup. Racism is an ideology which is used by white and black people. It is unfair to say that the world cup should not be in Russia because they are racist. Their freedom of speech is to benefit to its own people not like in some European countries such as UK where white men has to be quite because a foreigner has more rights to say what he feels or thinks is correct. Russia had hosted events in the past and I am sure they can deliver european standard of the game.
I have experienced many times racist comments from black people! Moreover, they tend to be more agressive than other people too.
As pointed out earlier, Chechens are not black and neither are Georgians. These two racial sub-groups are as Caucasian as is possible and are notoriously mistreated in Russia.
Allowing prejudice against non-Russians or neo-immigrants is the suppression of freedom of speech. Murdering people for being 'colored', forgive the term, is not a practice in free speech but pure barbarism. And if the Russian authorities impose absolutely no controls against racism, then Russia is not fit to host FIFA. [[http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/4737468.stm]]
Are you suggesting that non-white FIFA players are racist?
Do you mind proving that, because from the rhetoric on the left you seem to think that when a black person makes issue with a white person calling him/her a monkey, then the black person is racist? And people from all racists qualify as Russian, it's the citizenship/nationality that makes them Russian not the color of their skin.
White men in the U.K have to be quiet because a foreigner has more rights to say what he feels or thinks is correct? Really? Ever heard of the BNP? [[http://isthebnpracist.co.uk/]]
Britain has a significantly large non-white population that isn't foreign.
I'm sure a lot of black people are rude to you because the senseless banter, bordering on racism, on the left only proves that you are well, deserving of it.
Russia has a significant but small black population which has not been oppressed or exclusively enslaved in Russia
[[http://gawker.com/#!5595976/russia-elects-first-black-official]] Russia elected its first black official last year, blacks(South African origin) have been living in Russia since the ottoman's brought black slaves to Russia. [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_diaspora#Russia]]
"The first blacks in Russia were the result of the slave trade of the Ottoman Empire and their descendants still live on the coasts of the Black Sea. Czar Peter the Great was recommended by his friend Lefort to bring in Africans to Russia for hard labor. Alexander Pushkin was the descendant of the African princeling Abram Petrovich Gannibal, who became Peter's protege, was educated as a military engineer in France, and eventually became general-en-chef, responsible for the building of sea forts and canals in Russia."
In the 1930's fifty African families moved to Russia and in the 1960's when many African states were fighting wars of independence, Russia provided refuge for over 40 years and educated 400,000 African students during this period. Many of these students stayed in Russia.
There are no special records of "black" slavery or the freedom of blacks, in Russia as in the U.K and U.S. "Slavery remained a major institution in Russia until 1723, when the Peter the Great converted the household slaves into house serfs. Russian agricultural slaves were formally converted into serfs earlier in 1679. Russia's more than 23 million privately held serfs were freed from their lords by an edict of Alexander II in 1861. State owned serfs were emancipated in 1866.. According to Robert Davis between 1 million and 1.25 million Europeans were captured by Barbary pirates and sold as slaves in North Africa and Ottoman Empire between the 16th and 19th centuries. There was also an extensive trade in Christian slaves in the Black Sea region for several centuries until the Crimean Khanate was destroyed by the Russian Empire in 1783. In the 1570s close to 20,000 slaves a year were being sold in the Crimean port of Kaffa. The slaves were captured in southern Russia, Poland-Lithuania, Moldavia, Wallachia, and Circassia by Tatar horsemen in a trade known as the "harvesting of the steppe". In Podolia alone, about one-third of all the villages were destroyed or abandoned between 1578 and 1583. Some researchers estimate that altogether more than 3 million people were captured and enslaved during the time of the Crimean Khanate. It is estimated that up to 75% of the Crimean population consisted of slaves or freedmen."- [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavery]] the slaves in Russia were predominantly white rural populations and slaves of all colors/race were emancipated all at once.
Out of approx. 142 million people in Russia, only about 40 thousand are black, and these black people are usually mixed or Semitic or Gypsies, there has never been a violent oppression of blacks. Though there has been tension with non-black groups such as Chechens(The largest native ethnic group originating in the North Caucasus region) and Georgians (A South Caucasian ethnic group) . African engineering students have been mistreated by racist Russian bigots and have been portrayed time and time again as being drug dealers by the Russian media.
"The attacks have turned murderous in recent years. In St Petersburg, three Africans have been killed in suspected race attacks since September. Non-African foreign students have also been murdered, but it is the black students who attract most attention from the racists. Juldas, now leader of the African students at RUDN, says "monkey" insults and actual assaults are so frequent that students have ceased reporting them. "
Of the 1960's a veteran African student says "Such considerations did not exist when he arrived in Moscow a quarter of a century ago from Benin. No Soviet citizen, he recalls, would have dared raise their hand against a foreigner, and the USSR bore all the costs of its student "guests" from the developing world. "
But Russia is different now :"After the USSR collapsed, Russia paid no grants to foreign students for five years. A fraction of the system was restored in 1997, and today the number of foreign students in Russia from outside the ex-USSR is barely half the 1991 figure. Some 1,000 African students from 43 states now study at RUDN, Moscow's purpose-built university for foreign students.Communism may have gone, but the quality of Russian education is apparently still high."If you are prepared to study, you can get an education here you would not get even in the West," says Juldas. "
Racism against blacks and other non-Russians is common and unpunished in today's Russia.
The 1960's were another time the collapse of the former societ union has led to Russian nationalism and racism against foriegners
Russians suffered a tremendous blow from the collapse of the soviet union. Today many Russians openly blame non-Russians(not just non-whites, including Chechens and Georgians) for their political-economic comeuppance. Black football players are sound in their concerns about playing in Russia and seeing that the majority of football players in FiFa are not white; playing in Russia in the current climate is too much to ask.
People have been murdered for not being Russian, this is not the right time to hold a major multiracial international event in the region. [[http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/4737468.stm]]
Violent racist bigots are everywhere. [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racism_in_the_United_Kingdom]] [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racism_in_the_United_States]] What we need to recognize is that Russian racist groups just like groups of the sort everywhere else are a minority of the Population. International events are hosted in Russia all the time and free Africans with equal rights to Russians, have a century long past in Russia.
A few graphic and violent instances do not make the country racist. Racial slurs are known every where. "Let he who is free of sin cast the first stone" We are in a place to condemn this behavior but not in the place to judge since we aren't coming from race-blind societies ourselves.
The world cup is suppost to be fin for everyone including the players. If that is happening don't you think that the players aren't going to want to play in front of a racist crowd. Why have it there if no one wants to play?
It jeopardizes humanity
Absolutely no, because racism and xenophobia are forms of human rights violation. World cup is an international sporting event that brings togethter people of different races from all over the world both black and white. Therefore it requires peace, harmony, unity and integrity amongst both the players and the fans of the participating countries. It would be absurd for such a major international sporting event that is expected to exercise the respect of human rights to be held in such a country and besides, it would not attract enough fans since its security is threatening.
Considering the fact that protection of human rights and respect of fundamental freedoms is not fully guaranteed in Russia, it should not be involved in such sporting events.
Football is more than just a sport now
Sadly, football has become more than just a sport. Corruption, betting, money, news laws and rules, RACISM, and more has taken a lot of the attention of football. Football used to be played for fun. You could play in a game not having thousands of people booing you. You could play agaisnt players who do not fall as soon as you poke them.
Racism is probably the biggest issue in foorball today. Russia is one of the countries with most racism. People say that is it every countries right to be able to host the world cup. Well, it is every footballers right to play without racist comments. without knowing that as soon as you touch the ball 40,000 people are going to boo at you calling you different types of names.
In order to stop a world cup from becoming an international issue and joke, the world cup cannot be held in Russia.
What do you think?
