Is International Romani Union still effective today as decades ago?

"The IRU delegation presented the situation of Roma in Europe, and presented the President of the European Parliament, Mr. Jerzy Buzek, its views and proposal on the Roma participation in the activities destined to combat the problems arising from racism and marginalization. These problems are on the rise in many European countries. The IRU presented its views on the programs funded by the European Union for Roma, and insisted that for such programs, it is vital to get Roma participation, a participation going towards building their nation and towards Roma helping Roma. The IRU made an appeal for transparency on Roma policies and projects." - Communication of IRU Secretariat on occasion of meeting of IRU Delegation with the President of the European Parliament, 27/01/2011.

IRU needs the internal reform

If you ask me, then I can simply affirm that IRU needs the internal reform, which would lead to revival of this respected organization. They need to provide a "green light" for young generation of Roma activists and to be more open-minded.

IRU has not been able to adapt to the needs of its people fast enough

Given the situation today of Roma in Europe, the IRU has not been able to adapt to the needs of its people fast enough to offer the help they need. We need an organization that can respond quickly, and has the resources to do so. After so many decades, if we don't have funding in place then we need new leaders to get that infrastructre established.

Vice president of the board at Roma Community Centre.
