DO THE EARLY MARRIAGES LEAD TO INTELLECTUAL AND SOCIAL DEGRADATION IN ROMA COMMUNITIES?
"... Despite many of the minor Roma girls have good opportunities to complete their primary education, which is compulsory in Bulgaria they actually often are provoked to sacrifice their childhood entering into an illegal early marriage. What could be the consequences from such early marriages are well known to everyone: children give birth to children who in most cases are doomed to live in ghettos, poverty, misery, starvation! It is absolutely wrong to inculcate in the society that these practices are the result of Roma culture and traditions. We completely responsibly declare this is not a cultural characteristic of Roma community, nor a tradition one! The traditions enrich both the ethnics and nations and they are not prerequisites for physical, mental, intellectual and material plundering of the individuals and societies as whole. No a single community “tradition” should be a heavy burden for the society, neither to be over the state legislation. As regards to the culture, it should develop our values and moral virtues and successfully to counteract the further intellectual degradation of the societies." Do the early marriages lead to intellectual and social degradation in Roma communities?
Yes, because... is a violation to human, women, and children rights
Early marriages should not occur. This custom not only leads to an uneducated population, it is also leads to the exploitation of women, creating a slave mentality for them.
From slave mentality we go to the victim role, and from that to an incapacity of becoming active citizens and contributing members to society and then dependency on social help is transforms them into a burden on the society.
Then the rationality can go more, and the society start to reject it. is not available only for the Roma communities, is also for any community that deals with these types of issues.
Sure that it takes two in order to have a marriage. No matter the age if the one of the spouse is older or not, the victim mentality it comes out from not understand and not knowing yourself. You need time and experience in life to make a choice. To choose a religion, to choose a party (political), to choose a life style, first we have to know and then to apply.
I agree that both the girl and the boy can continue their studies after they get married, but when they are in a marriage or even with a child, their priorities will be others then studies. We can think if they are lucky the grandmother or mother/father of one of the spouse can take care of the child. But another issue will come out from here. That child will not benefit from the love and attention that he need from his parents, which leads later for that baby to some deviant behavior. "When you have a child is like you are saying: i born in this world, i taste from the life and i find out is so good that it deserve to multiplying". Another thing that comes out from here is that both of them don't have the opportunities to become responsible in life, because some other member of their family will take some of their roles (like the role of mother or father for the baby). The girl will not be the "full time" mother the same for the boy.
Early marriages, if we are thinking that both spouse are underage, in my opinion disable from start 3 people, the couple and their baby. None of them will have a healthy development.
Is a chain reaction and if we think at a marriage as being the nucleus of the society, we can imagine what we are multiplying in this way.
Early marriages are not exclusive to Romanian girls/women.[1][2][3]
Young boys marry these girls. People (both boys and girls) can continue their education after marriage.
As far as slave mentality and being dead weights on the economy is concerned; as stated on the left; this can happen in any marriage where one spouse dominates the other.
Generally; this happens when one spouse(usually the male) is older than the other. Again, this discrepancy does not permeate in Roma marriages where both members of the couple are usually under age.

DECLARATION from Civic associations, women and mothers, members of the Mother centre’s network from Bulgaria, responsible citizens interested in the welfare of all Bulgarian children
Ladies and Gentlemen,
This declaration expresses:
Firstly, our deep concern about Roma girls whose childhood has been robbed before the unconcerned eyes of society and the institutions responsible for protection of Bulgarian children; Secondly, our commitment as responsible citizens to do what our conscience requires us and the Law for Child Protection, namely its art. 7, paragraph 1, which an obligation has been placed on the cooperation of every person: "Who becomes known to that a child needs protection then he/she is obligated immediately to notify the Social Assistance Directorate, State Agency for Child Protection or the Ministry of Interior. »
The reason for this declaration is a particular case: An 11-year old Roma girl from the town of Sliven gave birth a child and the responsible institutions have dealt perfunctorily with the case as, in fact, they always deal with all other cases when under age Roma girls are forced to create families before completion of their physical, mental and social development.
Our observations suggest that the early "marriages" of under age Roma girls have been increasing in the Roma neighbourhoods recently. Unfortunately, this phenomenon occurs even in the families that can ensure children having normal living conditions.

The vicious practice for marriage of Roma girls in the infant age is not anything else except a theft: theft of Roma children’s childhood and moral values of Roma community!
Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,
We would like this madness of early marriages in Roma community to stop being justified with pseudo-traditions and pseudo-culture! Every child has the right to live through his/her childhood and no a single community “tradition” should hinder that!
We would like the Law for Child Protection to provide really protection for every child, no matter of his/her ethnic origin!
We appeal you, within your mandates, to take immediate measures to ensure the institutions responsible for child protection at the local level to perform their duties in the most responsible and effective manner. They should not reinforce the bad practices of early marriages of Roma children, claiming that this is a “community tradition” and they can not intervene. This is not just abdication of professional obligations, but refusing to execute the law.
Our call is any person, no matter whether he/she is parent, relative and other violator, who irresponsibly brings a child at a risk and violates the children rights, to be brought to account according the STATE LEGISLATION! It is time the laws to be applied no selectively in our country and to provide security and protection for every citizen of the country! This is the most reliable way for social inclusion of any individual and group.

The problems are a lack of education, underage unsafe sex and a lack of ambition in a world that expects nothing of teenagers.
These problems may not be rooted in early marriages.
These factors may in fact; contribute in making early marriages a necessity.
If early marriages were abolished for the Roma then pregnant Roma girls may have no economically stable recourse nor anything to fall back upon. Marriage does not put a cork on education; people in these communities do not usually follow up on an education irrespective of whether they marry young, old or not at all.
The trick is to provide academic scholarships aimed at Roma boys &girls; such as this one[1] and thus motivating them to better their minds and lives.
Rather than making early marriage illegal; which will prove counterproductive as these marriages would still occur and the married children and their families will suffer/face legal consequences/penalties.[2]
