Why have people become more materialistic?
Why is status so determined by what we own? We judge others and feel judged because of what we wear, where we live and what car we drive. We pour over glossy magazines sighing in envy at the glamorous lives of the rich/wealthy and famous flitting from yacht to private plane to mansion. When really it means nothing, what matters is what we do, not what we have. We should stop being materialistic and focus on what’s true and proper and real.

Being materialistic means people set expectations of themselves that do not reflect their own true aspirations
Measuring how successful one is, based on the success and material possessions of others should not be the path a person takes in trying to be successful on their own terms. It distorts what they really, truly want and need as a person by giving them an image of success, through magazines or the media. The person aspires to be like these people and may find disappointment or a lack in what they want, or with the image-success they have achieved.
People usually aren't clear what they truly want anyway. They follow leaders or copy others because they want someone else to make their decisions for them. Knowing one's true destiny is difficult and takes most of a person's life. It has nothing to do with materialism.
People should not be judged by what they wear, or what possessions they have
By judging people on what they own, how we treat people becomes distorted and based on the societal expectations and rules that have constantly changed throughout history. A person is not an object, but a free-thinking individual that is unique and should not be treated by the collection of small objects/possessions that they are associated with, or perceived to be associated with. Their material representation may not necessarily be a personality representation and, and even if it is in one person's case, then that person should be accepted for who they are and not excluded or thought of negatively because they don't conform.
Have people really become more materialistic?
It might seem obvious that we have become more materialistic, mammon has replaced god in many people's lives. But is it really the case that we are more materialistic than we used to be rather than simply having more opportunity to be materialistic. Society has become much more open at the same time we have all become much richer. It has become ok to be materialistic and not to have any kind of moral centre. It is no longer expected that everyone will go to church instead it has become expected that everyone will want to collect more and more goods. There will always be some people who are not materialistic and some who are. But most of us are somewhere in the middle, and we have become more materialistic because it has become the expected thing rather than something to be frowned upon while we have also at the same time gained the opportunity to be materialistic by becoming more wealthy. Would a subsistance farmer be materialistic if he had the money to do it, in many cases yes.
