Government should pay for University

The government has recently ruled that tuition fees will rise to at least £9000 per year in effect from 2012. This however is another debate in itself.

The point here is that the government should pay for the tuition of the people that get into University.
Should they?
It would be interesting to hear views on this point?

Balanced society.

The rich should have to pay because it is the money they get, in large part, from the poor that allows them such a priveleged position. Where else would the money come from? Let us also not forget that the poor also pay taxes.

If it was not so a very definite elite class would emerge, becoming virtually impenetrable for all without. The facilitation of a path to higher education for lower income students is vital to maintaining, or even creating, a more balanced society.

Students from families on low incomes are eligable for a grant and are able to recieve EMA (Eduaction Maintenance Allowance) - a fixed sum of money given to poorer students to help pay for books etc.

The government has made it so the poor can go but the rich have to pay.

Student loans available to richer students are much less than those given to poorer families and although poorer students will have to repay more at the end of their degree, middle class parents are expected to provide the extra money needed by their student children - not always possible.

The parents of students who come from richer backgrounds undeniably pay higher tax rates than those from poorer backgrounds which goes towards the less wealthy students grants and bursaries but not towards their own children. why should they have to pay twice?

Huge debt at the end of Uni

Why should people who have the ability and desire to take their knowledge of their field further have to come out of uni struggling to save up to find a place to live. Graduates are first time buyers for houses and if the government is to make it easier for these people, the first thing they could do is to get rid of paying for education. Or if paying for the whole education offer to pay for degrees where we actually need people to work in, industries where we are stuggling to find the workers so that people who are interested in that field have an incentive to continue to study it. Once a field has enough qualified people then the free funding would cease. Also the government could create a scheme where if you wanted free education you would then have to sign up to that profession in a binding contract for however many years so that people don't use the government to get a degree and then use it to get a job in a different field, this would mean that only genuine people who are genuinly interested in that field would apply.

No-one actually has to pay the top-up fees. It's also not an enormous debt, and furthermore it's about the cheapest loan one can get.

This day and age

Should we really be paying in this rich western nation (England) to go to University? If we can so easily go to war by mistake spending billions in the process, payout millions in city bonuses, why cant the progression of knowledge be free in this country for people who will in the years to come develop the technology of the future.

Many rich western nations demand the payment of or contribution to higher education, from students. In the Shanghi Index of the worlds best universities (widly regarded as the most authoratitive guide to higher education quality) has only one univeristy in its top 50 - the University of Utrecht - in it from a country that offers free univeristy education. In order to gain quality it is vital to pay for it the, top 20 universities features only American and English Universities.

yes government should pay for high education...

because some teenagers can`t afford. because of, they don`t work and the main point is some students come from another city to study. so they are not with their parents here, that`s why if government pays, they can easily study. and in the future they`ll be an important person for the government. it is good for not only government but also for me in the future:-)..... am i right??????????

Although, yes, many teenagers cannot afford the tuition fee for College, the government should help them out, but think about it, you pay taxes for Colleges, say some student fresh out of high school decides to enter the free college, and flunks two years in a row and wastes his opportunity, he just wasted your money and probably didn't deserve to go in the first place to just blow it off. Am I Right??

University is too common

Studying shouldn't have to be 'for society's needs', it is a personal decision. If a degree is completely irrelevant to anything, it won't lead to a job either, so people who are motivated by a job won't take them.

Also if the government funds university it means that university applicants can be chosen on their ability and not their wealth.

Back in the day Uni was for the very bright and intelligent. Now, it seems like you can go nearly to any city, find a university and do a degree in just about anything which is completly irrelivant to society’s needs. What i would call ‘micky mouse’ subjects. Why should the taxpayer have to pay for this? It is not advancing knowledge at all is it?!

University = Drunk

A lot of people who do go to university find thier course very challenging or are so lucky to have the privilage to be their that they do not go out and get drunk regularly. Rather they stay in and revise as they have a difficult degree and want to come out with a good classification.

Most poeple who are at university usually have a brilliant time, not suprisingly because students are not generally working. Students enjoy going out in the town nearly every night in the week getting plasterd. Why should the government be subsidising this when these people could be out in the ‘real world’ earning, contributing to society and paying taxes to help everyone?!

It’s free to 18 … how much more do you want!!!?

Ultimately, if indeed these students 'reap the rewards' with better jobs they will be paying considerably more taxes and usually claiming less benefits. Furthermore they will probably be helping the economy in less direct ways - providing better health services, helping businesses become more successful or perhaps even going into teaching themselves.

The government needs people with degrees and will end up benefiting from their hard work - they just don't want to help them on their way. Funnily enough, the nation wasn't bankrupted when the current generation of politicians were greasing their way through Oxbridge, and if they'd left the door open behind them I think it's pretty unlikely we'd have collapsed into anarchy now. There may be more students these days, but ultimately that will mean more taxes for the government as many of those the students end up getting better paying jobs.

Education is free in the UK up to the age of 18 and students receive top of the class education up to this age which is considerably costly for the government. More government money would be a drain on the treasury, where money could be better spent elsewhere. those with the skill and ability to go to university can do so at their own cost as they will be the ones reap in in the rewards later in their life.

The fact is that the cost of funding everyone's university tutelage would be too much.

If everyone has a degree, then what is it worth? The answer - nothing

Not every University is taking students with 3 D's and an E. Especially if a student wants to study a difficult subject. But many students, who have the ability to learn, willing to learn and gain everything, just can't afford it. Wouldn't the Government benefit from having more successful people, who pay taxes?
I think that uni should be free, but the "taking in" rules should be harder.

Even now, pretty much everyone can get into a university in England with their 3 D's and an E. So just think how many more of these people would attend uni if it was free. The numbers would be ridiculous.
If everyone in the future can go to university for free and come out with some sort of degree in something whether it be origami or the science of superheroes. It's the age old question of if everyone has one, what is it worth?
