Yes because... No because...Family
and what is family without food/water/clothing? naked and dead?
what would you rather have naked dead family or food/water/clothing?Family is far more important. Which would you rather have? An iPod or family and friends. What is facebook without friends?
When 911 happened, people found out really fast how important family was as opposed to material goods. The first thing everyone wanted to do regardless if they were directly affected or not was to what...... get home to their families. Material items meant absolutely positively nothing.
We live in a material world
Yes because... No because...poverty or family
being poor is not equivalent to having nothing; being dead is.
I'd rather be poor and have nothing than lose my family,
having nothing is better then being deadWe live in a material world
Yes because... No because...material gain is not the end in itself
But as you've pointed out it is the only important means to any desirable end. Class/status is bought. Food/clothing is bought.
Longevity/health is bought(in socialism the government buys it for the people, otherwise people buy it for themselves: either way, it's bought). Many people hoard material possessions, but there is always a goal other than just having the possessions: they are a status symbol, they make people feel secure, they are to satisfy an addiction, they are to attract a mate etc. If the stimulus that made them feel better was something non-material they would obsessively try and hoard that too.
