Public sector cooperatives are the way forward.
The conservatives have announced their big idea that they hope will rival Thatcher’s idea of allowing people to buy their council house in the 80’s – to allow cooperatives within the public sector. This would give staff more say in how their organisation is run and hopefully lead to better services. While most savings made would go back to the government some could be kept as an incentive. As labour also claims that public sector cooperatives are their idea it seems that there is likely to be some movement towards them in the next parliament. But it ignores those who the public sector are supposed to serve; the public.
