DEBATE: RICH NATIONS SHOULD GIVE SWINE FLU VACCINES TO POOR NATIONS FOR FREE

Swine Flu did not become a major epidemic as predicted by the government. The government stockpiled Tamiflu in case a pandemic did occur and now much of this has not been used. But, poorer countries may need Tamiflu to protect them from Swine flu.

RICH NATIONS SHOULD GIVE SWINE FLU VACCINES TO POOR NATIONS FOR FREE
Other countries have chosen to give away their unused swine flu vaccine
Some countries have decided to give their unused swine flu vaccinations to other countries, for example, France and Germany. In those countries supply easily met demand. But, they did decide to sell their unused swine flu vaccinations rather than give them away for free. If Britain did decided to give their left over swine flu vaccines - which is around sixty million then it would be likely that they would charge other countries to use them. Most poor countries would not be able to afford this. Unfortunately, it is more likely that a pandemic of swine flu would occur in a poorer country. The standard of living is much lower and people do not have access to medicine. The illness originated in a poor country - Mexico and most people did there. There have been casualties in the UK, around 360 people have now died from the virus. There is a global shortage of the swine flu vaccine. Only three billion doses of the swine flu vaccine will be produced in the next year which will cover half the world's population according to the San Francisco Chronicle. What about the other half?Western countries who have unused swine flu vaccines should donate them to poorer countries - eight countries including the US have pledged to donate ten per cent of their stockpiles but this is nowhere near enough.
Health and charity are not competitions. Just because France and Germany have decided to sell their stock piles of the swine flu vaccine does not mean that Britain should try to be more altruistic and donate their swine flu vaccines. As stated in your argument, 360 people in Britain have died from swine flu, and many of these have been young in comparison to Britain’s life expectancy. Therefore we should keep the flu vaccines for our own uses until we are sure that the pandemic is over. Germany and France have been reckless with their public health and Britain should not fall in toe with them.

Giving away the unused swine flu vacines would cost the NHS
But this money has already been spent. The Government has already spent out this money on the vaccine. Keeping it in storage will not earn the Government any money. They cannot sell the vaccines back. We over spent on these vaccines, but people got the medicine they needed. We have enough hygiene regulations on water and toilet facilities and this minimizes the spread of swine flu. We no longer need all of the vaccines so we should give them away to countries that need them. This will cost us no more money than keeping them in storage.
The government expected that there would be a swine flu epidemic. At the height of the illness in July last year around 100,00 cases were being recorded each week. As a result the government decided to order a huge amount of swine flu vaccines, enough to vaccinate the whole of the population with some left over - around ninety million. Deals were done with two companies: Baxter and GlaxoSmithKline. This deal is worth £155 million. If the government choses to send the excess vaccines to poorer countries in the world then this would leave the NHS out of pocket as at least £1 billion has been spent on swine flu vaccines. But, the true cost could be much higher according to the Times.

We need to keep a stockpile for ourselves: charity begins at home
Even though new cases of swine flu have fallen sharply, the future is uncertain. Deaths could increase in 2010 due to the weather or other factors. The government needs to ensure that the public is protected.People are still be encouraged to get their swine flu vaccination especially if they belong to an at risk group including the under fives and the over sixty-fives. Nearly twenty four million doses of the vaccine have been given to these at risk groups. It has been suggested that supplies of the vaccine adjuvant should be kept - the chemical that is produced outside of the vaccine, to combat any future flu pandemics. This has a shelf life of five years.Professor David Salisbury said that "we need to keep stockpiles for ourselves as we do not know what's going to happen in 2010."
we should fend for ourselves before others.
