Obama one year in.
Voters in the US have had their say for the first time since Obama was elected, in several gubernatorial the democrats went down to defeat. Even in New Jersey, normally core democrat territory the democrats were defeated. While opinion of Obama may have plummeted this is no reason to write off his first year. He has made little progress internationally but has made a start on numerous big issues such as reducing nuclear weapons. He has been concentrating on the economy and now the USA is pulling out of recession and Healthcare has just passed the first hurdle in the House. So far success or failure?

Obama is doing much more for the environment
than any other U.S president in history. Obama being a Harvard educated lawyer has intelligently and actively recognized and worked around the threat and occurrence of climate change/global warming/pollution/ozone-layer-depletion.
Perhaps, the issue's prominence at least partially, results from Obama's work ethic and voice for the cause.
No other U.S president reigned at a time when the environment was given such intense global importance/prominence.
Obama could have handled this much better if he wasn't mostly invested in health care. If he would stall health-care reforms, he could conquer fears of job losses, high energy costs and increasing abject poverty resulting from the emphasis on tackling climate change through expensive reforms.
If Obama had focused on one reform at a time then both problems would have an improved chance of being solved.
Most environmentalists/scientists say that Obama despite having done considerable work for the environment still hasn't gotten a plan to achieve lowering emissions to levels that are safe for the planet.
Obama's efforts in the middle east
bore little fruit but little is better than nothing. Obama unlike other American presidents is not partial to Israel and his impartially brings Arabs and Muslims the world-over, who have been reared to make the Palestine-Israel conflict their problem; closer and familial towards him.
Obama may not have many concrete results from his work but he does have a lot of invisible support brewing because of his fairness, politeness and kindness.
Yes he HAS done much better than Bush in the middle East. Who started the Iraq war? Who claimed the war on terror are present-day crusades? Bush flared the fire of religious differences in a region which has enough fire to go around.
Obama plans to get the troops out of Iraq by august 2010. Obama is working for reconstruction and stability in Iraq. Unlike Bush, Obama does not drill oil or have ties with the Bin Laden family.
Please, any body would be better than Bush and for Obama to get Arabs to see Americans as civilised human beings after BUSH; is a tremendous accomplishment.
Many conservative Americans, do not like his respectful tribute to Muslims(9/11 is not a fading memory and major Nedal hasn't helped matters) and feel that he would have achieved much more if he hadn't offended the Israeli prime minister with his extreme demands from Israel.
Barack Obama received the noble peace prize due to his work on the reduction of tactical nukes and his progress in the middle east. Did he really do anything there that deserves him the noble peace prize? Has he even done more then George Bush?
The ruse is over, since the Israeli prime minister balked at the Obama administration plan for Palestine-Israel , Palestinians are being urged to compromise further and Israel is off the hook.
reimbursed funding for stem cell research
Obama has removed limits imposed by the Bush administration on Stem cell and embryonic research.
this move will save many lives in the future and might take care of the organ donor problem.
Capitalism is poison and Obama is not a communist.
GTMO will not be shut down by January 2010 as promised by the Obama administration.
One of the most important promises that the ruling U.S administration made was to shut down Guantanamo bay by next january. They said that the methods of torture used at the prison , denounced internationally will be ceased , yet complexities have arisen around the issue and Obama has backtracked on HIS own deadline.
It will 'eventually' be shut down. The prison has been an international problem long before Obama's term. The simple fact that his administration is tackling the issue head on in lieu of shoving it aside like everyone else means that he means business.
YES WE CAN: Obama is too optimistic
he puts too much on his plate and that of the American people and so the world, for people to be able to digest. Thus contemporary protests and qualms against Obama's suggestions are ubiquitous.
He views the world through rose-coloured glasses and expects everyone else to tag along. His ideas may be feasible in the long run but 'now' also matters. People are not ready to pay tremendous costs now in the aftermath of the financial crisis and during the food/oil crisis.
Is that why he's quick-fixing the budget with catastrophic long-term results? The American people will have to cut expenses down by i trillion dollars annually to fit Obama's long-term health/earth benefits approach.
Obama understands, unlike most politicians that in the end quick-fixes are superficial and do not have any real/significant impact on the betterment of human lives.
He rightly promises a better future spurning from the present sacrifices he calls people to make. Hope means tomorrow will be significantly better than today and tomorrow matters.
Nuclear proliferation: North korea & Iran
North Korea and Iran are showing no signs of remorse or deceleration of their nuclear campaign. The two Countries are out of U.S control and Obama's efforts mean nothing to them.
All countries exercising their sovereign rights to do what they will are not budging and Obama is not coercive/forceful/aggressive enough to make them.
He can not even stop the production of nuclear armaments in his own country despite having promised to do so soon enough.
The fact that Iran has 'not' A-bombed Israel is a lot of progress.
Gays settle for civil unions?
The Gay, lesbian and bi communities in the U.S had big hopes for Obama as the liberal leader who cared about them. Obama has not fulfilled expectations and has been a big disappoint for the minority community as a whole.
stalling is not equivocal to not coming through. It would be rational to understand that the U.S has bigger high-priority problems to consider first.
He has added attacks on people based on their sexual orientation to America's list of hate crimes.
Obama will not go back on his word, he's only asking to be allotted some more time.
The race card: Why is it that whenever Obama is crticised
the race card is played? many people are unhappy with Obama for broken promises and hefty costly reforms and their angst is not fueled by xenophobic racism.
Obama has made many statements about how he does not feel that all/most of the criticism levied against him is racially motivated. He understands that change is difficult. But it is a must, a calling of the times, if you will.
Troops cannot retreat from Iraq until and unless Iraqi elections go smoothly
Iraqi elections have shown no sign of running smoothly and American troops will probably leave in 2011 not august 2010 as Obama 'hopes'. And they will only leave in 2011 because they have to according to a treaty signed by Iraq.
There is still time for the tides to change.
Obama professed that legalising abortion is not very high on his agenda right now. But predictably: nothing doing.
In time, change is gradual(generally), it has only been a year.
What do you think?
