DEBATE: THE REPUBLICAN PARTY NEEDS TO BROADEN ITS BASE IF IT IS TO REGAIN POWER.

During George Bush’s presidency the Republican Party did not seek to hold a broad base of support, rather it turned to the right to give it electoral success. It would mobilise the religious on issues like abortion and encourage them to vote. The republicans now need to decide if they are to keep to a far right strategy or move more to the centre, embracing fiscal conservatives who have been increasingly marginalised in recent years.

THE REPUBLICAN PARTY NEEDS TO BROADEN ITS BASE IF IT IS TO REGAIN POWER.

Party Identification

In 2008 poll after poll indicated that voters favoured the Democrats in every important issue. They now have a 28-36% advantage over the Republican party in party identification, the highest either party has had for 20 years[1], even though their core values should appeal to middle America. The Republican Party need to rebrand to increase identification with these core supporters.

The GOP does need to readdress its party identification, but through strengthening the differences between it and the Democratic Party, not by further blurring the lines between the two. Its voting base is in the conservative right, not the centre and moderate candidates and policies will only lose the party more support.

World Economic Crisis

A change to fiscal conservatism as a focal policy would not only win over middle America, but all those worried about the economic crisis, increasing their appeal across the board.

'Moderate' or 'liberal' candidates are not accepted

The GOP's biggest spenders, the Republicans who have been around the longest, invest the most, and have the most power do not accept moderate candidates. Candidates, such as in upstate New York have recently been receiving pressure from the right, and in this case the candidate dropped out, losing a historically Republican debate to the Democrats. Without the support of the old guard, liberalisation or moderation of the party will serve to create divisions between Republicans within and between every state.
