DEBATE: DOES IT MATTER WHO MANAGES SCOTLAND?

Scotland manager George Burley has been sacked after a run of poor performances by the Scotland team. The SFA decided to fire him after defeats in friendlys to Japan and Wales with Scotland already having failed to qualify for the world cup. But who are Scotland kidding, of course we are likely to meet many defeats, we are a small nation and no matter how big our passion for the game we can’t overcome the greater range of options for players that the big teams have. It is not possible to turn a team from a small country of 5million into world beaters, so does it matter who Scotland pick as a manager?

DOES IT MATTER WHO MANAGES SCOTLAND?

Even if a good manager can't turn the tide, a bad one can make things even worse

It is impossible to measure the exact effect a manager can have on a football team. However, installing a new manager during a difficult time period can give rise to a positive attitude and a new hope. A strong manager can bring certain credibility to the whole organisation around him/her.

Scotland faces an important decision on their new national team boss. After a few succesful years under the guidance of Alex McLeish and gaining their top ever rank on FIFA ranking list Scots have arguably faded into a minor player on European level. Poor results of the Scottish national team in addition to problems of the Scottish national football league result in the whole Scottish football being in the brink of extinction, at least according to Glasgow Rangers boss Walter Smith. There are many examples of a new manager turning the fate of a team. Obviously it is impossible to say beforehand who might be the best candidate for the job, but in a situation Scotland is currently facing, a right decision could certainly bring a new momentum. Even the strongest manager can't fix all the problems single-handedly, but a bad one can certainly cause new ones.

Nobody is seriously thinking that a new manager would instantly turn Scotland into a World Cup winner candidate, but it is far too harsh to argue that it wouldn't matter at all who their boss is.

A defeatist attitude will get you nowhere.

Of course it matters who manages Scotland, if Alex Ferguson were to take the role, I think he could pull a few tricks. What this would do is also give Scotland more publicity and more pride. This will result in the Scottish people spending more on merchandise and therefore more money would be available to the club to invest in training sessions. It would take years to turn around a club, but there is a starting point and there is hope. This hope and spark needs to come from an inspiring manager.
