The development of a global low-carbon economy by 2020 is an unattainable dream

Environmentalists argue that all countries need to change their economies to being “low carbon” as quickly as possible. A low-carbon economy will be a more pleasant environment in which to live and will be sustainable. But is it realistic? It would require a complete revolution in how an economy works. It will need massive investment in new infrastructure, from renewable energy to new transport networks. A low carbon economy will need to minimise waste through as much recycling as possible. Energy must come from renewable resources. Everything must be sourced as locally as possible - including foodstuffs, materials and energy. Alongside this, there will have to be a revolution in how businesses and individuals think; industries will have to stop moving goods from one side of the world to the other, meetings will have to be held over the internet, there will be no more cheap holidays and we will eat less meat and exotic foodstuffs. Is this really possible?

The development of a global low-carbon economy by 2020 is an unattainable dream

Yes because... No because...

yes it is possible , we know what to do , we know how to get there and world leaders understanding the importance of the issue at this time, are willing to invest.

All we need is to invest time, effort and money into the project. And this can be achieved through mass awareness and involvement which the Climate change conference in Copenhagen will cater for.

Gas-guzzling luxury cars can all be slam-bam-ed to rubble or showcased in museums[or in mansions, most people keep expensive cars to show off not to drive around in . In Karachi, fancy cars(unless bulletproofed) are kept at home for fear of car theft] once the movement gains strength and there is enough awareness, socially responsible filthy rich businessman will be giving away cars to charities.

The media will project homosexual vegans riding around in hybrids/or-even-hydro-powered-vehicles(it has begun, associate anything with the 'rich' and 'sexy' image and voila! it sells) as cool/awesome/fabulous.

Nerds/dweebs/dorks/dworks/geeks/Eco-friendly-staunch-liberals(ref the cartoon: "the Goode family") are the new IT-crowd(ref T.V show: The I.T Crowd).

The awareness exists, the funds are coming and the motivation is also there. but what prevents the formation of a decent low carbon economy is mainly the attitudes.

Agreed that by imposing norms and regulation in developing economies and making new development sustainable, we may be able to reduce the rate of increase in carbon emission, but unless something drastic is done about the present state of affairs, we may never be able to reduce our emissions.

By the present state of affairs i mean, the gas guzzling luxury cars we drive, the AC's we run at full blast, as a status symbol, the wooden furniture we furnish our homes with and so on. The main hazard behind a low carbon economy is the organizations that promote these products and their heavy involvement in the state of affairs worldwide.

Unless our attitudes towards life and its implications on the climate changes, no matter how much we try, there will always be a demand for energy and the low carbon economy shall remain a distant dream.

Market will lead....

We have already seen quite a development around the whole world in terms of Carbon Market. This market will continue to grow and my belief lies here that by 2020, this market will become equivalent to the Global Financial market, because till 2020, these extreme events will continue to rise and new investments in this sector will continue to have uncertain returns. And whenever there is uncertainty, there is money to be made. So, by 2020, legally binding treaty or no binding treaty, this market will become a global one and once that happens, new investments from all around the world will flow towards green technology.

So, market will lead this movement and not politicians, whose role in this whole thing, will lose importance gradually over the next few years and their uncooperative, narrow behaviour will be solely responsible for that.

SAY NO TO EMOTIONS

Low Carbon world is attainable. The issue is laying the foundation with different templates for each economic block by 2020. Emotions, wrong attitudes and arrogance of leaders globally could stall the processes.

COST OF CLEAN AND NEW TECHNOLOGY

For developing and least developed nations, cost of clean and new technologies could be barriers.

Countries can develop foundation/technology/infrastructure in a very short period of time

The development is a long term process, and the development which is taking place at present in countries like India and China is a reflection of the decisions which were taken about 10 years ago. The year 2020 is a very short term goal and hence it can be easily judged that it is indeed an unattainable dream.

Development of basic infrastructure and amenities is based on long term planning and projects which have to be completed in 2020 are already on the track.

In developing countries the goal is highly improbable, but in developed economies we can link the stimulus packages with environment friendly projects and they might be able to achieve the goals. Development in times like 1800 and 1750 were mostly basic amenities and now it is secondary infrastructure. Hence such development is highly improbable now.

Many countries have developed their infrastructure over a short period of time, so for example most railways in the western world were built between 1850 and 1900, most canals between 1750 and 1800 and these were in days where there were not the immense machines for construction we have now. They were built with navies, manpower.

The key thing is the will of the state itself, private enterprise wont do it because the creation of a low carbon economy is risky and we do not know for certain what the rewards are or even what the end point will be. This means the state is needed, and states have shown time and time again that where there is a will there is a way. Totalitarian regimes while they may be terrible are very good at building things, Stalin built an industrialised economy in 15 years in a country as vast as Russia so we should be able to create a low carbon economy as quickly.
