DEBATE: IS JENSON BUTTON A WORTHY FORMULA 1 WORLD CHAMPION?

Jenson Button has become the second Briton in a row to become World Champion at Formula 1. However, he spent rather longer over finishing it off than he could have done, and he allowed his lead to slip after a very impressive start to the season. Does it even matter if someone is ‘worthy’ of being world champion? They are either way.

First and foremost, he scored the most points this season, proving himself to be the most consistent, the best, better than his rivals and therefore surely worthy of the title.

A world-class performance
His performance at Interlagos on Sunday was little short of brilliant. Starting from 14th on the grid, he proved his worth by having the drive of his life. He demonstrated utterly aggressive manoeuvring, undeniable class and truly skillful, fast driving to gain him 5th place, more than enough to crown him Champion.

A highly competitive season
His cool, calm demeanor and utter joy at winning the title in a highly competitive season demonstrate the hard work and effort he has put into his career, surely provoking viewers and fans of the sport to recognise him as a worthy winner.

The Long Wait
He has waited ten years to be crowned Champion. This wait may be at least partly attributed to the cars Button has driven in the past, none of which were efficient enough to win races. Having finally been given an excellent drive, Button has been able to prove his worth as a driver. He deserves the reward of the World Champion for his patience and determination.

The length of time that Button has taken to achieve World Champion status may suggest that he lacks the natural skill and talent often associated with those such as Fernando Alonso. His performances in past Championship seasons have failed to dazzle.

It took him until his seventh season the even win a race, reinforcing the idea that he may lack ‘natural’ talent.

The necessity of a good car
Many would suggest that it is the car, rather than the driver that has won the status of World Champion. Perhaps his talent relies too much on a good car.

The second half of the season was certainly not full of the winning performances of the first half.
