The Scottish National Party has been demanding equal representation, after all they run the government of one of the nations that make up the United Kingdom. If the other parties are to hold TV debates in the run up to the election the SNP must be involved.

SHOULD THE SNP GET EQUAL REPRESENTATION WITH THE OTHER THREE POLITICAL PARTIES IN THE UK GENERAL ELECTION BROADCASTS?
The SNP are the governing party of Scotland
The SNP have a right to be featured in TV debates and deserve to have a fair share of the time nationally allocated to party election broadcasts on television as, at present, they are the governing party of Scotland. Neither the Conservatives nor the Liberal Democrats are the governing party in any of the constituent countries that make-up the United Kingdom. Therefore, it stands to reason that the SNP, in some respects, have MORE right to feature in television debates than either of the other two main political parties. Some of the key issues to be debated such as the economy, foreign policy, health, social care etc...are all issues that are going to affect Scottish citizens as profoundly as people throughout the UK. The SNP deserve the right to discuss their policies and to quiz the other parties on theirs. The public service remit of UK broadcasting is specifically designed to ensure that all sections of society are being catered for, and Scotland deserve to hear their administration participating in an important election debate. To have seperate debates for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland would go against the spirit of inclusivity.

SNP Policies need to be debated nationally
The SNP's cornerstone Policy is independance for Scotland. In that respect, such an issue deserves to be aired on a national stage as it is a decision that affects all those within the UK. Despite the fact that such a constitutional question is hardly likely to be relevant in the near future; it is something that the public at large deserve to hear debated by the three other most prominent politicians in the land. The SNP also have a right to voice their opinion on defence, and the European Union. The SNP support nuclear disarmament and are at their core isolationist in their view on foreign policy, the Scottish should hear the alternative views from the national leaders, just as those in England, Northern Ireland and Wales deserve to hear what the leading party in their neighbour to the north stand for.

The SNP are a Scottish National, NOT a UK National Party
Alex Salmond can never be Prime Minister. Not unless he crosses the floor, changes his views radically and moves up the ranks of one of either the Labour or the Conservative Parties. The SNP do not speak on issues that can or will affect England, Northern Ireland or Wales in any profound way. Independance IS a Scottish issue; those in the UK will not be affected beyond a slight sense of disappointment through a sentimental attachment to the idea of a "United" Kingdom. If the SNP, then why not Plaid? Why not the DUP? Sinn Fein? Or even the Cornish Nationalist Party known as Mebyon Kernow? The point is that representation is not criteria enough. Otherwise the BNP (*gasp*) may be laying a claim to a place at the podium. The qualifying factor must be viability, and the Scottish National Party are not viable contenders, they cannot be since they do not field candidates in any constituency outside of Scotland. Some may argue that in terms of actually winning the Liberal Democrats are also not strictly viable, but they could "technically" win the election, where as the SNP cannot.

Why not a seperate debate for Scotland?
One of the SNP's key arguments is that any debate broadcast in Scotland would be highly partial and biased were it to exclude them. Yet, why is it unreasonable to allow the three main party leaders that focus on UK-wide issues to have a debate, which would be available to those in Scotland, whilst also having a Scotland-sepcific debate broadcast subsequently?Would that not strengthen the whole level of debate? Having had the main party leaders argue the UK national context, the constituent countries of the UK could then have their own debates around local issues, with the Alex Salmond debating alongside his Scottish Parliament opponents. Surely one of the Scottish Nationalists' key bug-bear is centralisation in politics and the control of Westminster. Are they not playing against their own argument my demanding (almost begging) to appear alongside the centralised-power-seeking Westminster based leaders?A Scotland only debate would appeal directly to the concerns of the electorate and would symbolise that spirit of Scottish independance that they so crave.
