THE FRENCH KISSING BAN

Swine flu is a growing threat in Europe as we head towards winter in the Northern Hemisphere. So much so that the French tradition of kissing when meeting is under threat of a ban if there are emergancy measures. Some schools and companies are already imposing such bans on pupils and employees. To kiss or not to kiss that is the question.

The French kissing ban

Yes, because... Swine flu threat

Swine flu is a major threat and will become more so as France heads towards winter when flu is much more serious than it is over the summer. The French tradition of kissing when meeting in such a situation is taking a big risk of spreading the infection much faster than it would otherwise spread. If France is to attempt any sort of containment of the virus then such a ban is necessary. It is particularly necessary for schools as children are more vulnerable to infection and more likely to die as a result of the virus. Schools in the town of Guilvinec, in Brittany, have been the first to introduce a ban for teachers and students. "Instead of kissing, some teachers have introduced "bise boxes", in which pupils slip heart-shaped greetings which are then passed around."[1]

The French kissing ban

Yes, because... Kissing is kind of disgusting.

Who wants to see people kiss right in front of you? It makes all sorts of disgusting noises, it is indecent, it is physically difficult and feels awkward to look away, if an overenthusiastic or drunk person tries to kiss you without your consent it is embarassing and their breath smells awful, it should be done more discreetly.

They aren't banning that kind of kissing. They are banning the platonic cheek kiss French 'greeting'.

The French kissing ban

No, because... What will they ban next?

most of those things are banned in public as it is. The bise-box idea is for public arenas, schools.

Children are not being stopped from kissing people's cheeks at home.

As you state: There is no ban on the kind of kissing France is famous for.

This is a ban to protect the children.

How do diseases spread? kissing is one factor(kissing on the mouth, which is not under the threat of being banned is actually more dangerous a transmitter than the 'kiss each-other's cheeks greeting' that is ), talking to a person(saliva is airborne it travels into the air as you speak irrrespective of whether you 'spit' while you talk or not), touching(especially with unwashed hands), sex, using the same needles/sharp objects and well, virtually any form of contact. You can't 'ban' everything.

During the S.A.R.S threat people were told to wear gas masks: Something that would be infinitely more effective than a ban on tradition, as it protects people from sneezes and coughs (acts that can otherwise not be controlled/contained/prevented).

Children can spread the disease with heart-shaped cards just as easily as kissing cheeks. They will obviously handle the cards and if they've got a cold (since children aren't exactly hygiene-conscious) they will not wash their hands every-time the sneeze. Thus the replacement for the greeting is no better.

The French kissing ban

No, because... Placebo effect

Kissing, hugging, stroking, caressing and/or any other physical gesture of warmth creates a sense of well-being/security that helps patients heal faster(accelerates the healing process). All diseases have a psycho(psychological) and soma(physical) element. Some diseases are called psychosomatic since the physical symptoms are caused SOLELY by psychological factors. However I repeat 'ALL' diseases have these elements. People 'feel' better when they are greeted warmly and affectionately.

Touch therapy and Reiki are both effective healing methods for a variety of diseases[1]

So, on the flip-side the greeting could help alleviate the disease and its symptoms.

And this might also explain why France is less affected than Britain.[2]
